Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Is it too early to volunteer to be laid off?

Just the thought of going back to work makes me feel sick to my stomach.

This question really boils down to your relationship with your manager. Too late for February, but there’s always August.

You're very late, the Feb list was locked Dec. You can, it's very risky and be sure you're late.

I told my manager in November that I would volunteer for a layoff if one came around. I am nearing retirement age and would rather not see one of my younger co workers with kids and a mortgage let go.
But the deal has to be sweet enough, not just a "thanks for twenty years of your life, here's your last check".

At least wait and collect your bonus and allow any RSUs you have to vest in March

If you are serious about doing this, do it now so you make the cutoff date to get in on the Feb WFR.

"If you want to be laid off, this is the perfect time to say so."

Don't say anything. You owe nothing to dell. The idea it will be paid forward to other employees is a load of BS as well.

quiet quit.

what's the worse thing that can happen, you say something, you get not bonus and merit raise and then you DON'T get laid off. Ya, that would work out just great.

Ok, Dell manager here. If you want to be laid off, this is the perfect time to say so. At the end of January we have to allocate ACR, bonuses, LTI options etc. If you're not planning to stay then you should tell your manager now so those bonuses etc can be allocated to others. You won't get pending LTI or bonuses if you are laid off. A lot of retirees leave Dell this way. Dell doesn't really do voluntary layoff or retirement packages so we just feign performance or motivation decline. Think carefully though. Find out your local severance package and check local job market. It may makes sense to get laid off with severance rather than resign to go to a new job without it. Then again some prospective employers might see it as a red flag on your resume. There might be an internal job req you can apply for. Fully understand your feeling though, Dell is not a motivating place to work right now.
