Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Trust no one

A bit of advice that’s been shared many times before on this forum.

Get your experience and get the h*ll out of this place before it damage your reputation, career, or worst, your mental health. I’ve been burned many times through the years. Make sure you document to protect yourself. When the chips are down, your boss and co-workers will bully, cheat, steal and lie to get ahead. Or to survive the annual hunger game. Be careful who you confide in. It’s best not to form bonds because eventually the person will disappoint you by drinking from the poison well.

Smells like Bee TEC or Sheit TEC. It smells like the cesspool it is.

My position is bo--y and my function is null to be outsourced. Actually I am in engineering at Baytown. It is a toxic cesspool. Well you can call it engineering but I am a glorified project manager. The real engineering is done in India and I just check over and approve the work. I have three Indian engineers working for me and they do a good job.

It's funny - that is what I told an experienced hire recently. "Trust no one"

This is the best advice - trust no one. You can be the kindest, most hard working person, but people don’t like that. The jealously is obvious, and people will do whatever they can to break you down and backstab you.
This year my attitude has changed significantly. It’s all about outwardly networking, selling yourself and creating impact EVERYONE sees to rank high enough to get a pay rise and fly under the radar of attention. It’s work, a paycheck. I enjoy with I do, but the people are so toxic.

I’m curious what function you all are in that’s so toxic? Engineering, IT, Controllers, Trading, Geology? I wonder if certain types of people in specific groups have a propensity to have these negative traits everyone is noting. We should take poll. Upvote your function if you the descriptions below fit them (majority backstabbing and can’t be trusted).

This is so true at many of the downstream sites. Believe it or you will be on the pip route. I have never seen so many good contractors fired because they said something wrong even though they were good workers and intelligent. They just did not fit in with the group, click gang. We are left with the lazy boot lickers that only no how to kiss a ss and not do any work. I have seen to many undeserving employees fired or piped when the worthless were spared or made excuses for.

Well you guys must be washing the bosses cars or kissing their a rses. Lucky you. For the majority this place su-ks. The few get to have friends and trust. In every position I have been in their were always at least one backstabber snake in the group. The place I am in now is 90 percent full of backstabbers, watchers ,spies for the supervisors. I trust no one at this place. Comments I have made in the halls between myself and one person i trust were replayed by my supervisor. I had some trust worthy freinds10 years back but they have all retired. Now all there is are just young eager snakes that want to move up at any cost. The managers keep deluding these people by promising promotions and power. I have one person I can trust in my area now out of 30. These are not good odds. When you experience this betrayal you will learn to trust no one. I was naive and d-mb 25 years ago. I was talkin to a co worker who was then telling the boss everything I said. The co worker made the things I said even more nasty and made me look worse. I was lucky that another employee warned me about this snake. My ranking dropped because of this perception and talk. After this I never shared any personal information or complaints with this snake. The problem with the snakes is they are camouflaged and try to be a friend to get damaging information on you. Remember if they seem to friendly and helpful it might be a trap. I am glad that some employees have not experienced this but myself and at least 80 percent of the employees I have worked with and known have gone through this.

26 years with the company and yeah its toxic. Not everyone. But alot and getting worse. Dont believe the "life long friends" trolls. Rarely happens. I have great friends outside the company. Not inside. Too cut throat. Had a few decent managers but plenty that took credit for my work or tossed me under the bus for political ends (CSR/PTD managers were the worst). The energy sciences one is still around sadly.

I’ve been here nearly 10 years. I’ve never had a manager or coworker take credit for my work. I have life long friends from the company, although many have since left for a multitude of reasons.

Maybe certain organizations are more cutthroat than others and I haven’t seen it, but painting the entire company with a broad brush like this doesn’t seem right.

If you are telling your coworkers to trust no one, does that mean they shouldn’t trust you? Are you a backstabber, liar, and cheater? If so, I guess I see where you get your logic from. But don’t think you are the only person at the company with good morals. There are plenty of them (from my experience, a majority). The bad ones that get rewarded just cast a negative shadow over everyone else.

Funny. Last year I retired after 35 years of service with lots of money and many friends that still work for the company. Maybe you should just behave like a normal human person and not like a sociopath.....
