Thread regarding Citrix Systems Inc. layoffs

Layoff is not the worst thing that can happen to you

Perhaps it's an ugly thing to say at this moment because there are those who want to keep their jobs, but I think that a layoff is not the worst thing that can happen to someone at Citrix.
It's worse to be stuck here, to be lulled into false security while your skills atrophy and you slowly become unmarketable.

I have no idea where you are working if you let your skill atrophy that much. People from the engineering group I am in are getting jobs with Microsoft, Amazon, and Google.

I've been surrounded by people at Citrix that are skilled in old software technologies. It's not just that they stayed too long, it's that they have became complacent and chose not to re-skill. That's why they're going to find it hard to get job offers. I hope they learn from this life lesson. Everyone must invest in themselves -- new marketable skills

Keeping your skills current in tech is critical. You don't want to be 40 years old with skills in old technology, because you will be chained to your employer with no hope of leaving. If that means you take a job now that doesn't quite pay what you want, but offers you the chance to grow, then you have to do it.

In 30 years in the industry I've never heard of anyone getting blacklisted for staying at a company too long. Regardless of that company. Maybe one hiring manager out of dozens might feel that way a bit, but it's usually the exact opposite.

No skilled tech industry person ever said, "I'd really like to tell people that I work at a software company that drifted slowly and then quickly into total obscurity."

Likewise, no future employer ever said, "I can understand why you chose to stay at Citrix, and waited patiently to be fired. You're the kind of decisive person I want on my team."

Interesting thought here. This is like Superman and Kryptonite sort of speak? Those remaining at Citrix (SCG) will lose their skills (aka power) as time moves on to the point where we're drained (aka unmarketable) useless to the industry because the technology we support is outdated.

Thought provoking indeed.
