Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

The U.S. Said It’d Give Billions to Chipmakers Like Intel. Now Come the Layoffs

https://time.com/6222411/intel-layoffs-chips-act/

"When a group of semiconductor companies, including Intel Corp., lobbied Congress to pass the $52 billion chip-stimulus bill earlier this year—one of the biggest federal investments in a private industry—they argued in part that the subsidies and tax breaks would protect American jobs.

But now just months before the funding applications open, the nation’s largest semiconductor company is reportedly planning a major reduction in its workforce—yet could still receive billions in federal subsidies. ... The move also puts Intel chief executive Pat Gelsinger—who received a $179 million compensation package last year—in a difficult position."

2 things from your statement:
1 - They are cleaning house before they apply for the federal funding. Once they receive it they will be creating jobs when they start hiring again like they do after every layoff.
2 - The compensation package for PG last year included the money Intel needed to provide him to cover the accrued benefits that he walked away from at VMware. He was CEO there for over 8 years so he likely had a huge amount of stock that was still vesting. VMware stock was over $160 a share when he left.

From a taxpayer point of view it will be better to give the money to a leaner company. More of the money goes to improving the company's position rather than paying wages to what most of the comments of this site indicate is a bloated and lazy workforce.

However, layoffs don't change how the company is run. Having lived through multiple of the big layoffs it is obvious that the company has learned nothing and will just start the cycle all over again. The next major layoff will be 6-8 years out.

@1jrv+1jfXPaDm. I read somewhere that the US govt will try to destroy TSMC should communist China invade Taiwan. Not sure how accurate this is, but certainly a possibility.

CCP invading Taiwan is d-mb d-mb d-mb.
This scenario does not benefit CCP and would hurt way more than help.

ASML and others would cutoff supply to Taiwan and they would be effectively frozen In time. New machines and development would migrate to Korea and to a lesser extent US and Europe.

Chine has no advantage in developing EUV machines or other advanced fab tech tooling.

This money is to build fabs in US as quickly as possible due to the anticipated take over of Taiwan by CCP. Tsmc is building fabs here too due to this emergency. This money is not meant to make Intel develop competitive or profitable products. Intel can’t control competition or inflation caused by Federal reserve.
