I work in Engineering and my boss asked me if I wanted to volunteer as he said the layoff is the second week in November. He said I would be an employee until mid January and then would get 1 week for every year that I have been here. He said that given I have been here so long that I would get a really big package. He also said he was told that he needed to exit his older/highly paid employees to make room for the college kids where they could get 2 for 1. He told me that I should take this package since the people that lost their jobs in September did not get these 2 extra months. That sucks! and he said that the layoffs in the spring may not give the extra 2 months. I turned him down since I'm an older white male and it will be hard to find a job. What happened to this place? It was such an amazing place to work with inspirational engineering leaders.

Fire the CEO and executive teams.
Like others have said, document all concerning conversations with your manager and report this behavior to the ethics and compliance team. Detailed notes with dates are vital (especially if it is needed in the future when the next rif comes around). Word on the street is that we will be having several more during this fiscal year and we all know they target the older workers as they make assumptions as to when they should retire.
Document everything you can. Take notes on management conversations about any age related issues and ask your workmates to do the same. Seagate lost big in a class action suit because of this type of behavior 2 decades ago. Keep your family first and hope for the best. We are in the same boat over at The Gate. Good Luck!
Because of the greed BoD and incompetence of David Goeckler, they spent money buying SanDiks and now stuck with that fireball in hand.
I have work for an Engineering group for the past 12 years and never got any appreciation of what I contributed to the group. Basically, scripted most of the task in SQL and JMP and making the task more efficient. Performing those, I still never received a decent raise. My dilemma is that my rent increase for the year eventually surpassed my salary raise for the year. Only positive about this job is the work is just a mile and a half from home. Late last year, an opportunity came and no questions asked and grabbed it. By the way, I am just a technician and performing an Engineering type of job.
the layoff of 50+ at the same location triggers the California WARN act, which mandates 60 days advance notice. In lieu of the notice, the employer typically pays for 60 days after layoff
A manager who disclosed a resource action, spoke about potential future actions, and stated their need to make room for younger engineers has questionable judgement. This targeted and inept approach smacks of ageism. It doesn't end with this mgr, it is a widely held attitude to trim the elderly workers with job elimination if they don't go along with the take a package approach. Know and exercise your rights as a protected class.
Can anyone explain why the rif package in November is bigger than September? Is it because of this size of the layoff? I heard if they space them out, they can cheat their employees out of a decent package. It looks like that is what they did in September to those poor people. I guess when you make millions of dollars, you cannot bear to see employees down in the ranks get a little money to help support their family until they can find a job. Perhaps they are worried that their bonuses will be lower if they help these people out. I hope Tiffany does something to make this right given Christine does nothing for the people of this company.
It's probably a good time to sell your stock as the price will crash after they pay off all the lawsuits for age discrimination. I'm guessing a class action will be coming their way.
I've heard the same things that many of you mentioned. The ELT wants the older people out and are not shy about sharing this strategy. They put their managers in a bad place as they do not have a choice in the matter as it's usually the chief of staff that is calling the shots and HR is nowhere to be found. A message to the college hires that are riding high on this gravy train, don't waste your time at this place as they will use you and then throw you to the curb when the next younger generation enters the workforce.
Anyone working on MAMR should be thinking they are gone, is what I heard. It was nonsense back in 2017 and wasting that amount of time and money anyone who ever touched MAMR should be canned. If you're too stupid to figure out what you're working on can't work, you shouldn't be working.
Submit an anonymous case to compliance. Ageism at its finest. It is no secret they want boomers out! JK openly talks about how old sales force is... he forgets he may look 16, but he is an older white male too. that REALLY likes to talk about himself!
Ask if you can take the package and then be hired as a contractor. Ultimately you may end up in the same place, but as a contractor you may find more opportunity and control over your time.
It's really sad what has happened to our engineering org in the past few years. The leadership has derailed us and stifled innovation. This is no longer a place where engineers can further their skills, develop and be recognized for their contributions. Instead, they use you until they want someone younger and then kick you to the curb. What happened to celebrating loyalty and appreciating years of hard work and dedication. I just don't understand why HR is not involved and stopping this. Oh well, I guess since DG brought CB in, they both can do anything they want given there is no checks and balances. All we can hope is that Tiffany and her compliance team is looking at this behavior as it is highly unethical and WILL lead to expensive lawsuits and will tarnish our brand in the engineering world. Why would anyone want to come here and deal with this. It's certainly not happening at Seagate. I know engineers throughout this company are asking themselves "are we better today than we were 2.5 years ago when this CEO from the engineering ranks came to this company". The answer among the engineering ranks is NO! I think the BOD needs to put in a HR person that is non-bias so we have a fighting chance
