I still cannot understand the logic by which some of the high performers fail to be promoted, while others get promoted so easily. Can someone explain it to me, why are promotions done they way they are?
It's demoralizing when you see that people who don't deserve it at all have been promoted, while at the same time you are persistently trying and making huge efforts, but all in vain.

Hello d-mba$$es. they promote by who you know not what you know. Bottom line. Forget EE and coding focus on improve the lick skills to lick the a$$ho-e clean and fluffy.
Promos use to be based off of merit and technical contribution but now it's different. It is not any different than any other company. You know the individuals who add process on top of process and quote KPI just to show they are doing something but in reality they are creating a big company culture full of layers of useless work. The ones who question every process and work on streamlining them should be given rewards. They are the only ones promoting efficiency.
The Senior Director promotions in PTE do not make sense. They are all brown nose Yes men. The ship is sinking.
Qualcomm is full of people who are confused! First off politics are part of the game and everyone in here doesn’t realize this. 2nd Qualcomm biggest businesses have nothing to do with innovation - this politics will be a heavy influence in those businesses (QCT). 3rd if you are not good at politics go to a startup up or start your own company where technical merit will be used for promotion
It's not like the Sr Dir's and VPs running the circus of promotions are honest, moral people. There is a conflict of interest between them and the people they manage. Most Sr Directors want to be VP's. But at the same time they have LONG lost their technical chops. They KNOW they likely won't be able to get another job elsewhere. Some just want to KEEP their jobs.
So, with the team of people who they have been entrusted with to 1) move forward Qualcomm's progress, and 2) care and support for the employee's career growth, if for no other reason as way of employee retention. In the end, if a good employee leaves, Q loses.
However, that is in conflict with their OWN personal interest of survival and promotion. Why? Because, as mentioned above, they've lost their technical chops. Without it, they can't make decisions on what project directions are worth pursuing, what directions are just a fad, how long should a project take, what are the implications, the likely end result, etc. So what they need are 2 things: 1) Yes men/women that can make fast and cute little demos that are nothing more than smoke and mirrors with so they can show (read: con) THEIR bosses that their team is doing something. 2) Someone to blame for their own mismanagement.
So hopefully you can see now that if you're an engineer working for an old man looking to stay afloat, you're just a pawn. To a drowning man, you're either a lifejacket or an anchor. Take your pick.
Qualcomm is full of brown nosers who rise to their titles by befriending specific decision makers. It's basically the cultural norm to have a VP or Senior Director in your pocket to advocate for you, even when you suck loyalty outweighs everything.
Promotion is not always your performance. Here is what I learned
1> Stop comparing yourself with your peers. I know it's hard but do try.
2> Do your job well. This is the baseline. Act as a force multiplier. How can you improve something in your team or your group or in your company? Be it a manual process or a process improvement. It's a never-ending loop and once you have a win - make sure you announce it well so that you get visibility and your peers are using it and giving feedback.
2> Collaborate and Communicate Clearly. Learn how to express thoughts on a different level of technical levels (Novice to Expert) and with clarity.
3> Life is short. The rat race is endless. If you dont like where you work, move unless you have visa restrictions.
All the best.
Everyone deserves what they get in life … this is the first thing you must learn. Second is you have to go after what you want! If an employer doesn’t want to promote you - go to a new employer that will… staying where you are at and complaining will get you know where…. Don’t be afraid to leave and get promoted at another company
