Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

gzv Apparently very few here read or know history. The same language argument was used by the trucking industry when Clinton wanted to allow Mexican truck drivers into the US. They started incrementally and only allowed the Mexican truck drivers into the US within a certain mileage limit. Today you can find them (as well as Canadian drivers) all over the US.

As far as foreign workers not speaking English, I know a lot who speak great English. Just because they are from another country doesn't mean they can't speak or understand English. We also have many illegals who speak English fluently.

I don't care what anyone does. Go ahead and strike. I just pointed out correctly what has happened in the past with the Air Traffic Controllers. Don't think it will happen to you? Go ahead and strike.

SMH 3w6x you have to speak English to work on the RR so that won’t work. Try again, how would the dispatchers communicate with foreign workers? How would an Engineer communicate with a Conductor that doesn’t speak the same language? Just think about it and then know that that probably won’t work but hey nice try.

All those down voting whr needs to do a little research on what happened to the air traffic controllers back in the 1980s. They were ordered back to work by congress after contract negotiations failed and refused. They were fired and replaced. They were not allowed to be rehired either. Back in the mid 1990s, Clinton reversed that rule and allowed them to be rehired back as ATCs again.

Same thing will happen to the railroad employees who decide to strike. They will be replaced. Don't think it will happen? There's a couple million illegals that have been let in the US in the past couple years. I'm sure they are just itching for a good paying RR job and I guarantee they won't be striking either.

Fed Judge has nothing to do with it at this point.

That's a simple one! They can mark everyone that did a mutual strike as a no-show, and find replacements. Those replacements could be immediate or near future. Essentially you'd be placing a target on your back. If congress does step in and order everyone to continue working, you really don't want to stop working just because you didn't get everything you wanted in the contract. I don't like the contract at all, and did not vote for it. Walking off of the job and striking after being ordered to continue working, gives the company a reason to terminate any employee based on the refusal to work. The company would have no reason to consider you for employment in the future either. So, yeah the contract blows. Current working conditions blow, but a paycheck is way better than NO paycheck.

Congress can’t stop strike . Would need a federal judge to sign an order to stop it.

Can someone please explain how Congress can physically stop a national railroad strike ? If the unfavorable terms are forced on the workers by Congress, but the workers refuse to work, what happens next ?
