Thread regarding Walmart layoffs

I'm not worried about self checkout or any other type of automation

All retail environment's in the last 10 years have been moving towards automation. Self check out and so on. Why? Because a self check out terminal for example does not; complain, call in, steal, play on a phone all day, quit, not show up at all, it's a one time cost up front, no medical, no drama, does not develop a negative attitude at the drop of a hat, no turn over rate and the list never ends.

Do you know what self-checkout terminals don't do? They don't help confused elderly customers, stop people who steal, make things faster if a person is learning how to use it for the tenth time, make things faster when they malfunction (which they do a lot!), provide customers with human connection many are still looking for, ask customers to do the work that should be done by the store, and the list never ends. I know people who don't use self-checkout because they don't want to help corporations replace employees. The number of those people is growing, not shrinking. We're not that easy to replace.

How do you think Walmart is paying for all the labor picking the online orders?

You will own nothing and be happy.

A trend that has been moving upward and will continue to climb. It's not going backward and will not go away.

This is a trend; retail still needs cashiers for challenged customers or high-volume buyers.

If you truly believe all of retail isn't moving in this direction you are only forecasting one layer out. Plan 3-5 years from now. What does retail look like?
You should have at least one person to help the customer that isn't comfortable with self check out. That is how it's done now. Shrink will happen and self check out is no exception. Except the percentage of the store shrink is very low as to the total shrink of most locations.

Keep defending it all you want.....This post has it right as well.
Believe me, Walmart could care less about any if that. The truth is, self check out saves a ton of money and is faster than the check out lines. By a huge margin, customers prefer the self checkout. Even with the shrink (theft) that occurs there, it still is a smart idea.

Walmart store associates can only thank themselves for all this.

Humans can be sometimes good at defense, but are much better at offense.

Need to keep developing new skills.
