Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

The Narrative

It’s disgusting how rail employees are being portrayed in the media . The comments from folks whom are not in the industry. The thanks for keeping America going during Covid but paid sick days for employees are greedy . How nobody questions the class 1’s record profits and blames labor . Having been in the industry 20+ yrs it’s disgusting to see what folks think of us and our sacrifices. This has always been a silent service but not anymore . To the men /women that do this job you know you’re worth . You have been called overpaid , undereducated, greedy and easy to replace . That couldn’t be further from the truth . Keep your heads held high brothers and sisters . You guys do an amazing job keeping this country moving

@cve Gee, jealous much? I'm going to point out the same thing the last poster pointed out too. Not all college grads are managers. I have two mechanical degrees, oh and one of those is in engineering. Guess what? I was never a manager either. I left the company after 20+ years. The only reason I started at the UP, was because I needed a job right after school, and there really wasn't a huge market for mechanical engineers at the time. Just an FYI for you too. I can read a tape measure just fine!

@cve, you obviously are an uneducated, jealous person. Almost always when someone says something like what you posted they did not attend college. All college grads with Union Pacific are not managers. I went into craft instead of management because I wanted to run trains. I like my job and am not interested in management. College did help me with understanding how businesses operate, how to invest my money, and gave me a totally different perspective on life than what I would have if I didn’t attend. Your comments are I’ll informed and incorrect.

Why does it matter what outside people think of us? It's not going to change no matter how much we bi--h and scream about it. I really don't give a damn what people think of me. You have multiple government agencies watching these railroads because of big service issues, and the best part is that most of it has been televised. So ask yourself again whether or not it matters. The real question that should be asked is WHEN will the accountability issue be raised. It all starts at the top, and it's going to be the ones at the top who's going to be held responsible. Quit worrying about stories and rumors from the outside, highlighting misplaced blame.

This is exactly why opinions of the unknowing do not matter. The publics opinion does not effect our job. What the media portrays does not matter. We are the ones that matter, grow up and stop caring about things that do not matter

The average person if they saw our paystub and how much more gets taken out versus just social security would prob have a change of heart.

Some media sources have continued for generations to push unions = bad. Have some good employers been ultimately harmed by some bad unions, yes. But that is not the whole or even half of the story. I would drop my union membership in a split second if UP was just a modestly trust worthy DECENT employer. Then you have people who drank the college = your a special genius worth big $$$ purple kool aid. When they see what they were indoctrinated to discriminatorily categorize as “uneducated” people earning close to or more money than they’re paid they are overwhelmed w/ the emotion of jealous anger. News flash, 99% of college educations DO NOT raise an individuals IQ. Want an example of how poorly prepared college grads are? I repeatedly have witnessed mech & civil engineer grads fail to be able to figure fractions on a tape measure. That is PATHETIC!

Ver well said ! It is the greedy railroad companies who are holding the American economy hostage, not the workers who need some realistic relief from their draconian attendance policies.
