Thread regarding Teradata Corp. layoffs

Severance? Should I negotiate?

I was unceremoniously laid off after 5 years 2 months of "service". This is the first time in the layoffs rodeo. My severance is 14 weeks of pay. Is it fair? Is it possible to negotiate?

Wow, you guys are getting screwed. I got six months full pay and partial healthcare. As well, as career counseling. My attorney said it was the best severance he had seen. I was a US PS manager with 30 years in.

There’s what you find acceptable — and then there is what is reality. If you’re an American worker at the director level (or equivalent) and below and you’ve managed 4 weeks severance per years worked at company and you’ve been there more than 2 years), you basically won the severance lottery.

I understand many other countries have protections in place where severance is much more generous than in the USA.

Anything less than 4 weeks per year of service is not acceptable...

14 weeks is awesome. I was laid off from snowflake last week and got 2 weeks.

The severance is above average. Don’t waste anytime or emotional energy on TDC. I got laid off 2 years ago after 5 years and it was the best thing to happen. Severance plus a sign on bonus was 2+ months pay and got a raise and work at a great company. There are lots of opportunities out there so don’t worry about TDC. I enjoyed the people and the tech while I was there but am so much happier in my new company.

I am sorry that you were laid off; I was as well. 30+ years service and got 14 weeks severance. I know all of you haters will say I was deadwood and a loser for staying that long... I get why you might think that way, but I disagree. I was really good at my job and I really cared. There were and still are a lot of very smart, dedicated, really, really nice people that work at Teradata. However, I would encourage any and all of you still there to look for opportunities elsewhere. Especially if you are younger with many working years ahead. Certainly, do not stay out of dedication for this company, or management or co-workers. They will not hesitate to kick you to the curb in a 15-minute webex call by a 23-year-old HR representative with a canned speech giving you 14 weeks' severance. Shame on you, Teradata. You should do better than that for a 30+ year employee.

@dft. There is no minimum in California because whether to pay severance or not is completely at the discretion of the employer.

If they were to offer me 14 weeks I would run over people getting to the door. This place is doomed.

If you’re in the USA my guess is that is as good as it’s going to get for severance.

I received only 8 weeks after working at another company for 8 years, and I’m in California (I think 8 weeks is the minimum they can give you in CA).

I don’t think I’ve heard anyone successfully negotiate more severance here at Teradata… has anyone else?

It never hurts to ask at the time whether it’s negotiable.

Depends. If you can spin the layoff as retaliation for you thinking about coming out as trans, I would definitely ask for more. KCC would probably even fight on your behalf.

You're welcome. Keep your chin up. Hard to believe it right now but these layoffs aren't about you or your work and I'm sure you did Teradata right.

14 weeks is definitely above average. Most TD layoffs are 8 weeks.

That being said, so sorry you're experiencing this. Hope that you land on your feet soon!

Wow sounds nice. I was at Oracle for longer and received only 8 weeks but they are ruthless compared to TD so others here will know best what you should do
