Thread regarding Twitter layoffs

Meanwhile in Europe

So Musk sent emails to European Twitter employees, firing them. Problem is, you cannot legally fire people that way here, so legally they're still employed and legally owed money for their time. But also, firing people as exists in the USA doesn't exist here...

The redundancy payment is not much. I did some calculation on a website. I put in that I'm 61 years old, I get paid 2000 pounds a week. I worked for the company for 36 years. These are the numbers from the tool.
17K pounds max payment is not much at all for Musk or any high tech company.

Calculate your statutory redundancy pay:
Information based on your answers
Your statutory redundancy payment is £17,130 (£17,820 in Northern Ireland).
How it’s worked out
Pay is capped at £571 (£594 in Northern Ireland) per week. Length of service is capped at 20 years.

The maximum amount of statutory redundancy pay is £17,130 (£17,820 in Northern Ireland)

Years of service or earnings over these amounts aren’t included in the calculation.

You can’t get less than the statutory amount but you may get more if your employer has a redundancy scheme. Redundancy pay up to £30,000 is tax-free.

Your entitlement is 30.0 weeks.

Yea he can't do that in the UK. You need proper cause to fire someone. Besides, processes are laid out in the contract. When it comes to layoffs - again, this is UK, a company cannot just lay people off over night. Unless they are laying off less than 20 people ...

20 to 99 redundancies - the consultation must start at least 30 days before any dismissals take effect

100 or more redundancies - the consultation must start at least 45 days before any dismissals take effect

The ONLY way to get around the laws here in the UK are severance packages - which usually means you get paid more than statutory redundancy pay

You’ll get:

half a week’s pay for each full year you were under 22
one week’s pay for each full year you were 22 or older, but under 41
one and half week’s pay for each full year you were 41 or older
Length of service is capped at 20 years.

Your weekly pay is the average you earned per week over the 12 weeks before the day you got your redundancy notice.

So to avoid consultation periods and other laws they offer severance that is higher than statutory (usually) which means you have to sign a clause including an NDA (been there, done that).

My current notice in the UK is 12 weeks and I handed in my 12 weeks resignation the day Elon boy wanted me to click the magic 'yes'.

My flight to Thailand is next weekend where I will just forget all about that and have some cheap beer and then I am going back to interviews.

I started the day the deal went through with interviews - funny enough I used to work for Tesla so I knew there's no way in he-l I want to work for him again / still.

Problem is, @OP left no context to what happen aside from saying "cannot fire them". This is blatantly false even in Europe where there are more regulations about letting people go.

Firing requires a breach of a term in the employee's contract. Even then 2 written warnings are expected.

You can lay people off. That requires notice and compensation by local law and written documentation submitted to local governments explaining why the layoffs are necessary.
