Elon and boomers seem shocked that new generations refuse to be exploited. That's what's happening here. Nobody is afraid of hard work. What Elon wants is not hard work, he wants people to give up their lives for work for no extra pay. He wants to exploit them to the maximum (I wonder where he learned to do that...) And a lot of them are having none of it. Good on every single one of those who decided not to take his cr-p.

Hmm you are on salary they bought your soul 24/7 so no overtime for you buddy you are not hourly.
Exploited?
'My boss is so mean. He paid me $125k+ a year fresh out of college, provided subsidized housing, free limo bus transportation and meals at my workplace, and the ability to work from home with minimal supervision. Now he's asking me to work harder. I can't take it anymore'.
"the town Square concept, the playground work environment, free meals.... It's all a marketing facade to promote the company as some 'right on' entity."
No, it's all to keep butts in seats, working and (hopefully) creating value. Providing free whatever is peanuts compared getting folks to work extra hours for free. Case in point, I worked for a place way back in 2000-2001 with Free Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner every day, and company roundtable/party every Friday. All very nice, but folks were there coding 12-14 hours a day, every day. My attitude has always been "Just give me cash (or stock, or RSU's, or options) and I'll do the work required." Sometimes it's 14 hour days, sometimes it's 8 or 6, but I'll get the project done. Fortunately, post-pandemic, more people are coming around to that point of view. Of course, the media/internet is SHOCKED and call it "Quiet Quitting." Whatever, I'll be over here at my screen, quietly coding.
You know Elon is not a boomer, right? He's 51 years old. GenX.
And, listen to OldCoder - he or she is right. Layoffs are not some new thing being done to this generation. It is something your generation should have always planned for because bubbles burst and what goes up must come dow. This isn't the first tech bubble or business bubble to burst.
That said, the way Elon is doing this is cruel and crazy and obnoxious. Everyone also hates MZ but he did it with a lot more humanity.
Taxes, big government, and the scam known as healthcare are our biggest problems.
Gen this and gen that are fake, made up by lazy media to sell magazines and old timey newspapers.
Hey, you know what would be fun? If we all looked to some other countries on how they handle employment and benefits for their citizens.
I am a fan of Capitalism, but the invisible hand of the market only takes care of the market.
What's good for you, your family, your town and your country are not the same as what's good for the market.
People should be treated well at work, there's no reason not to, and thousands of unemployed people are actually not at all good for the market.
And hey, has Twitter ever made any money? In how many years?
Just because a business exists, and is maybe even popular, doesn't mean it makes sense, earning's wise.
@iqf+1jLyzkaK It's entitlement. Entitlement is taught. Employees are expecting the company to live by the glossy HR BS they give out during orientation. The corporations have developed a chameleon nature to appear valuable to all sides. The reality. The town Square concept, the playground work environment, free meals.... It's ll a marketing facade to promote the company as some 'right on' entity.
The mistakes were made when Jack wanted more money and sold out to the market. Once you sell to the market you have sold your soul and an Elon or Jack Welch will turn up.
Advertisers are not afraid of what Elon Musk will do to Twitter, they are just concerned that Musk has removed the chameleon skin and is showing the world how all business is run behind the curtain.
Any antipathy between the generations is wasted energy. The reality is that everyone was screwed by the man AGAIN and now people are pointing fingers. That's okay for the company, they don't care and with a good team of strategists any faltering in results will be blamed on you and not the useless product they are trying to sell. Be honest here. Twitter is pointless.
What Elon wants are hard workers who love their work. Unfortunately there are not that many people who fit that criteria. Realistically at most 10% of the people really give more than that required to perform at an excellent performance level. But we need the good performers too. What we don’t need in a work force are those who are technically bad or don’t care about doing a good job. Keep an eye on the re-engineering process of this company. Next year it will be repeated over and over again with public companies during the recession. The work force will lose their grip on corporations and CEOs will finally be back in control again. Is that good? Time will tell.
Boomer here, suggesting that these are two separate issues.
The promise of hard work and long hours is clear. The rewards for that hard work and the direction of "Twitter 2.0" are both vague. I'd only work long hours because I loved the work, or because it might make me rich. Most Twitter folks are not "spoiled brats"; they just recognize a bad deal where the costs are clear and the benefits are not.
The "spoiled brat" description does apply to a few folks. But most of these people are not spoiled; they're just young. I've been laid off twice, and I've seen my job go to India twice, but they haven't. They are honestly surprised that layoffs occur, and that our jobs can be outsourced. They are learning, and they will be stronger for it.
