Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

Do the people in charge read these?

If the people in charge read these, I’d like to ask if any of you have walked inside your stores lately? As a customer, I don’t want to walk through stacks of unpacked boxes when I’m shopping. Your stores are such a cluttered mess that I didn’t even know where the regular store ended and the backstage area began - my only clue was that all the junk lying around in backstage was actually unpacked and not still in a giant cardboard box (like it is in the regular part of the store). And whoever had the genius idea to force customers to shop by designers should be fired. I came in to buy a black dress but I had to climb around boxes and figure out which designer might have one. News flash, Charter Club is lame. Also, I don’t know your designers and I don’t care, I just wanted to buy a dress! I gave up and went to another store. I could see all of your employees working hard, but it was clear they were overwhelmed trying to help customers and unpack boxes at the same time. Here’s an idea, hire people to unpack, stock shelves, and clean up at night when customers are NOT there!! Well, if you’re just trying to make bankruptcy come faster, you’re doing a great job. If that’s not your plan, you might want to do some customer surveys and figure out what needs to change.

I worked at Macy's about five years ago. It always made me chuckle when there was an "executive visit" scheduled for the store. We would immediately go to work fixing all the wrongs with the store to make it look presentable. This could include painting, new lights, and new carpet. The store would be cleaned up and organized. While I understand the why, it was never a correct representation of the store at any given point in time. How is management supposed to fix the underlying problem if we were constantly putting a band-aid on it? Executive Management; do yourself a favor and drop in a store unannounced. I can't imagine you would be pleased with seeing what your customers experience.

By reading all this stories going on with this company is crazy and ridiculous. It's seems that Macy's doesn't have a plan how to run a business.

We have cut so many jobs that the stores can't run the way they are supposed to. We just had a visit and all of the store managers in the market had to go help cleanup a store so it wouldn't look like so much of a disaster for the visit. Two weeks before Thanksgiving and our store has two trucks sitting on the dock and we are sending the store manager to do go-backs and put on a show for a visit. Clearly nobody wants to see how stores really look. It is so stressful working here and nobody seems to care about anything other than putting on a good show.

I was in a Pittsburgh store in the South Hills a few weeks ago and they had no toilet paper in the restroom. The lady working in the sheet department near the restroom told me they sent someone to Target to purchase some.

It gets better I made a purchase and the poor cashier was so apologetic because the only bag she had was a generic grocery sack that said Thank You all over it. It was a wrinkled and she tied to straighten it out. I feel badly for the employees. She said they were out of bags for a week. Clearly there is a serious management problem.
I don’t expect to buy a hundred dollar pair of pants and have them placed on a old grocery sack. I will not be returning to Macy’s.

What a failure for a once proud department store chain. On a recent visit to major metro store near San Francisco and the racks were half empty but all of the fitting rooms had carts of clothing that hadn't been put back on the floor. We saw stockrooms so full of cartons of merchandise that the doors couldn't be closed and they were packed solid, the person we asked for help to find a size couldn't even get into the stockroom.

We asked a manager for help and were told that they couldn't hire anyone and had twenty trucks of merchandise waiting to be unloaded, he offered to order it online and ship it to us for free even through the store showed owning 20 units . One week before Black Friday, do yourself a favor and order it online. These stores are a broken mess.

I cannot wait for Von Maur to open in South Hills Village. Maybe that will wake Macy’s up and they will finally take a big broom and clean up the mess that they call a store. It’s so bad that I don’t even waste my time shopping there anymore. They have limited brand named n merchandise and the store is a total mess.

Not all Macy stores are like you described. We have a strong BOH team, merchandisers, and selling colleagues...We may overspend to complete the tasks, but we have a neat, organized and recovered floor. Our stockrooms are very, very full, but they are organized for easy fill-in. We work as a team, often, very long days. We have one of the best score cards in the region. This work is hard and requires a significant buy in from everyone.

Your comments as a customer are true. I don’t think senior management is particularly concerned about your experience. The reason ….Macy stores are still selling, making and many days beating plan. I’m a long ,long term knowledgeable employee. I’m appalled at the disgusting state of the Macys I work in, as are many veteran employees. It’s depressing for us! We don’t want to work in a mess! Our store manager couldn’t care less and his poorly led, badly trained managers know no different. The overwhelming mess and lack of basic floor or back of house standards are the result of management incompetence and staffing cuts. It’s unbelievable how merchandise is treated….on the dirty floor and often heaped on registers. Again…..the store is a mess…but the customers continue to shop. I’m guessing it’s due to lack of competition. Where else can one buy a Calvin Klein mens suit, Tommy Hilfiger sweater , Ralph Lauren jeans , Adrianna Papell dress or Patricia Nash handbag etc. Macys has little competition and customers are willing to wade through the mess and accept the lack of help. That’s the magic of Macys.

Being a tenured employee I couldn't agree with you more. I've had many roles within retail, but with Macy's... it has definitely been a rollercoaster of highs and lows.
