Thread regarding Meta / Facebook layoffs

So unfair to get 16 weeks package

How was your severance package?
I was with Meta for 2 years and just got 16 weeks severance.
It’s so unfair.

I was cut when my previous startup lost funding and cut half the staff. The package was 1 week for every year of service. This is fairly typical. Some of the packages, like Meta and Stripe, would be a dream for most people.

This is why Facebook and other tech companies failed. A bunch of spoiled kids. Quiet quitting, now loud firing.

You have a lot of growing up to do and you will need to do it fast as there will be a lot of pain at most companies for the next couple of years. It will be a rough ride for whiners and those unprepared for the new reality.

I would just add that most of us — if our parents love us — grow up feeling some sense of entitlement.

Then we find out that the world doesn’t love us. The world is transactional. We have to market skills that the world wants. Otherwise, it doesn’t care about us.

The year 2022 is beginning to look a lot like the year 2000. That’s the last time I got laid off. People are going to learn some hard lessons this year. And they will be stronger for it.

Unfair? 16 weeks is generous and aren't they also paying for your healthcare for 6 months? That's more than most people get.

I've been laid off twice, so I understand your frustration. But layoffs are normal in our profession.

The world doesn't owe us jobs, or severance, or anything at all. We have to market some skill that the world wants.

If you can lose your entitled attitude, it will be easier to get your next job.

this is the type of attitude that probably was the target of the layoffs. premodonnas that have no appreciation for what they had - just that the company OWES the world to them. Zuck said it earlier in the year, does people just don't belong at FB and he's been using his AI/ML stuff to figure out who he should dump

Industry standard is 2 weeks for every year of service.

The OP should get 20 weeks severance.

Meta does not owe you anything. You should be considered lucky to get 16 weeks of severance.

Good luck finding a new job!
