Thread regarding Google Inc. layoffs

How it will play out

15% RIF is coming. Much of this will come from shutting down whole projects. If you are in a shutdown team, you will be given a limited period to find a new role. Protip: There are no new roles because HC is frozen.

All divisions will be asked to shave 5% from their remaining workforce. Obviously anyone with a recent NI will be at the front of the queue. Directors anad managers will be asked to stack rank their reports. HR will be involved to make sure that there is plausible denability agsinst the inevitable biases against certain groups.

@6tfd+1jDOS8di set a timeline for further, hard proof for this rumor. Today's the day!

Here is where we are:

  • No new hard proof of this rumor was provided,
  • There has been a lot of press scuttlebutt about possible layoffs, however, they all hinge on 1. the TCI "activist investor" nonsense, 2. the Perf->GRAD changes, and the chain of deductions are weak and flawed.

At this time, this rumor is officially unsubstantiated. Note that this does not mean there will never be any future layoffs -- it means that this particular rumor, describing a 15% layoff in the works as November 10, is debunked.

Matter closed.

You must mean NE. If you were a Googler, you would know that things changed on the performance review front.

Let me know when real facts come out.

Google might be activist-proof, but it isn’t market-proof. - WSJ - this is very astute. At some point, pressure will mount. Articles abound about too many workers, too high salaries. This will lead to something, even if not a 13 percent reduction.

Does anyone know if there are layoffs planned in sales?

There has been a lot of doubt on this thread. @OP, please follow-up with more information by Wednesday the 23rd that we can confirm.

Otherwise, this rumor will be closed as unsubstantiated.

Google has kept a long streak of no formal layoffs. The macroeconomic situation isn't great, but just means we are running at 2018 levels of income.

Also a good chunk of Google's expenses are in RSUs (which Google has a cutsie name for). That cost (which is real enough to be accounted for) has gone down a lot.

Expect a lot of TVCs to be cut, and maybe sales will be in trouble, but eng should be mostly fine.

They aren't going to shut down a bunch of projects at once. A gradual elimination, yes, but that's hardly a change.

And "divisions?" We have orgs and PAs.

I suspect this is a troll.

How about directors and managers themselves? Sales directors and other managers enjoying by just dipping their fingers with only a few client discussions - know a few from NYC downtown and hudson yards who have started businesses on the side and cross selling competitive products. They don’t show to the office as well.
