Thread regarding Meta / Facebook layoffs

3 months at Meta, expecting to be laid off

Hello team I am an IC3 SWE, and this is my first full time SWE job - I've had some gigs while in college and a short 6 month stint at a local non-profit.

I've beet at Meta a bit over three months and I feel that I will be laid off. It's a gut feeling above all. I talked to some of my peers and it looks like that all of us who recently joined feel insecury and becasuse we cannot contribute a lot we feel even more insecure. I am not even sure if I can put Meta on my resume because if I get cut I'll only have three months at Meta.

It's sad.

True that

More probably though you get a rescinded offer from Meta after the dust settles this week

I am joining meta next month as E6. Will go through bootcamp first. What happens if I don’t get any team selection? With current situation at Meta that is possible? Thoughts?

Depends what they hired you to do. Some teams have discretion on where to cut budget. Perhaps they have budget to hire 2 and they just had 2 people leave. Maybe that manager can then only fill 2 spots (not 4).

A separate question - I am joining meta next month as E6. Will go through bootcamp first. What happens if I don’t get any team selection? With current situation at Meta that is possible? Thoughts?

You may not get axed, just because you just started. You make less than some tenured SWEs, and they also have more unvested stock options that you. Typically, they cut across the board, hitting all levels. We have 87K employees, and the cuts are expected to be 10%. That's one in ten. Good luck.

If you are a new graduate, they will likely keep you over a senior engineer because you get paid less.

New graduates don't immediately offer the same value as experienced engineers because they are like investments. Companies will probably choose to hire a senior over two recent graduates in this economic climate if they want to remain lean.

Sincerely, I believe you currently have a great chance to succeed by working for a high-risk business.
