Thread regarding Citrix Systems Inc. layoffs

Why do you think Citrix is to blame for your skill obsolescence?

I am not a cheerleader, nor do I want anyone to perceive this question as some kind of provocation. However, lately I hear a lot of people complaining that their skills have eroded here.
Okay, there are many reasons for complaining, but I don't understand how it is possible for someone to blame Citrix (or any other company) for the obsolescence of their own skills?

"Stop it! obsolete skills? Not CSG/Citrix fault."

The public perception of a failed company with a leadership team that was more focused on fraudulent financial engineering -- instead of investing in fixing known product shortcomings -- is the fault of Citrix ELT.

Nobody can't erase that perception in people's minds. That's the point the some seem to be missing here. And, the new CSG name won't change that perception. It's an unconvincing attempt to put a little modern lipstick on this legacy software pig.

No one follows Citrix you can still get interviews. Most tech companies are having some layoffs anyway.

"Rumour mills running wild that layoffs going into January 2023 among some of what’s going around."

Do any of the know-it-alls posting here even work for Citrix/CSG? There was literally a company-wide email from Tom Kause last month saying layoffs would start again in December and continue into January 2023.

"Citrix is now viewed in the marketplace as a place where 'modern tech ideas go to die'."

So, even if you personally have current skills, employers still question why a skilled software engineer would choose to stay at a failing company. The deniers want you to believe its not an issue, but it's hard to imagine that any hiring manager doesn't have reservations about making an offer to someone who comes from a failed company with inept leadership.

Stop it! obsolete skills? Not CSG/Citrix fault. Honestly when we’re you last on the enablement site? When were you last on Pluralsights? Yes, Citrix provides that FOR YOU to up skills to YOUR own pace. There is a lot of screwed up stuff going on at Citrix. Mostly from ELT team and obvious communication issues. That’s just the start. Rumour mills running wild that layoffs going into January 2023 among some of what’s going around. Brushing up your skills is NOT anyone’s fault but your own. Did Citrix tell anyone your not allowed to upskill? I’d be the first person to point out some of the most screwed up cr-p that is going on internally. But this…is everyone else’s personal fault. Stop blaming CSG/Citrix for your skill issues!!
Pro tip: if you actually got off your a-s and took some initiative and trained on brewer skills….maybe just maybe you can get out of the he-l whole that was an awesome company pre Elliot/Vista. Take some ownership and be accountable!!

@1dkm+1jAfzOXp There’s python in use here, it’s just deeply impregnated into a product that chews up engineers and spits them out into the job market. :)

Many newer languages and technologies are used now, that are not used in Citrix (or at least, not very much). Languages like GoLang, Python, etc. What many companies are calling "modern languages" when you read their job descriptions. The problem with Citrix is that for many, you are so mentally and physically exhausted after a day of dealing with the cr-p, that you don't have anything left to spend learning new things during off-hours. I've TRIED to incorporate Python, for instance, in my Citrix dev work, but often have to revert to "the old way" because learning takes too long for our unrealistic workloads.

"Lately I hear a lot of people complaining that their skills have eroded here."

And for good reason, Citrix is now viewed in the marketplace as a place where 'modern tech ideas go to die'. It's affecting many of our new job prospects, purely by association with this failing company.

If you've not interviewed for roles with our primary competitors and had them evaluate your technical skills, then perhaps that's why you're not informed about our challenges.

I do resent having to waste my time learning and doing SAFe bollocks. Unbelievable nonsense getting in the way of actual work/useful training.

What new things has a coder missed out in the last 3-4 years at Citrix?

It's not so much a question of learning new skills. One can do that in one's spare time, up to a point. The problem is trying to get another job when you have no practical experience with a technology. It would be better if you had had a chance to learn some newer things on the job.
