Thread regarding VMware layoffs

What was the deciding factor for you?

I got a decent offer which is great considering all the tech layoffs happening right now, but I'm unsure if I should accept it. I hate the idea of missing out on severance which might be a month or two away. Also, the offer is good, but it's not as good as my current position. If I'm not slated to be laid off, I'll be taking a pay cut for nothing. There are a lot of ifs here, I know. How did others decide to stay or leave? What was the thing that swung the pendulum a certain way for you?

First thing to ask is would you taken the offer if Broadcom was not in picture. If not, don’t take it. Try for a better one. You can’t decide based on unknowns. I had 11 years in VMware, I wanted to move out even before Broadcom announcement. I was tired of the place and work I was doing was not valuable to my career. I moved for the same salary knowing I would waste one more year.

Here’s the problem now. Now your competition for any role is small compared to the time after layoffs. You may end up competing with 100s if not 1000s (depending on the size of layoffs). Your chances def. won’t be the same then. Your severance will quickly dry up.

I'm in the same boat. The big variable (in my opinion) is zero confirmation on what severance packages would look like. As a 12 year employee, if somebody would definitively say that we get 4 weeks per every year or something of the sort then I would have no problem grinding at my day job knowing that worse case scenario of getting laid off leads to a nearly a year's worth of pay. But they could just as easily say "here's your two months and COBRA, go kick rocks" and then I lose all salary negotiation leverage at the next position.

Devil's advocate says there's no reason for them to provide any reassurances while everybody is quitting for free anyway.

Strictly speculation here - but I get RSU's every year and the first cliff vest is always 12 months out; however, this past cycle granted this summer was March 1st. Which leads me to believe they're dangling that carrot until they can get their heads around manpower and clean house at the start of the FY in Feb or at the end of Q4. That way the bulk of the chargeoff from layoff expenses happens prior to AVGO taking the books.

If you feel that you are doing good here and have decent wlb and package , I would suggest not to switch job, but if it is otherwise you should do it. But remember in current situation if you are worrying about layoff here (say 50% chance) , you won’t be safe in new company as well and you will be the first one to layoff there (80% of chance) . So weigh your options and decide. I have an offer too , but i have decided not to leave and face it. As i am doing good here.

We don’t know what will happen or when, so it’s not just about the money. Take the job, have a fresh start and get away from all the negative c**p.

I don't want to have to compete with thousands of other VMware employees looking for jobs at the same time when lay offs happen if I'm apart of them.

Even if not cut the first round, this will be an evolving process for years. Massive cuts are going to have to happen for Hock to make good on promises of taking VMware from 3.5 billion to 8 billion in 3 years. There is no way around it, layoffs will be massive.

If the market shifts because of this acquisition, I don't want my skills to be primarily VMware. I'd rather be at a partner where I can leap to another technology if need be.

I know it is natural to seek validation for one’s decisions, but honestly this is what I would and have been saying. If the news of the acquisition jogged your brain and made you realize you’re not so happy working here, then find something you like and go elsewhere. If you get an offer you like at a place you like, and it is what you want to do, then leave. I would not sell yourself short nor jump ship just because some as----e here says you’re an id--t if you don’t jump ship ASAP.

I'm also in the same situation. Have a job offer that I'd like to take but want to stay until I know what's going on. Work in the tanzoo lab services branch. Offer is less money but is super stable.

I was told that the closing won’t happen til April. Don’t rush to leave, so you can get a package.
