I checked this page as a joke and I definitely didn't expect to find that there are both Sears and Kmart stores still standing. How is that even possible?

We're now down to about 7.4 Kmarts, with the closing of Hato Rey and the downsizing of Miami.
All run by SHI. I'm sure they are doing a bang up job.
Sears still exists thanks to loss prevention. A recent model shows the company would have ceased to exist 8.4 years ago without our interventions.
At last count, there are:
- 13 non-liquidating full-size Sears stores, and 3 liquidating stores
- 5 non-liquidating small-format Sears stores, and 2 liquidating stores
- 9 Kmarts, none currently liquidating
- about 130 remaining Sears Hometown stores, a number that keeps dropping every week
While possible, I doubt Eddie's Lawyers would have allowed such a thing in the contract when all of the stores were purchased from Sears Holdings. Seeing how he operates, his offer to purchase back in 2018 would have included no strings attached to the old company.
13 Full-Line Sears stores and 9 Kmarts are still open as of 10-5-22.
Pretty sure there is an outcome of the bankruptcy that is still pending that requires Sears to have a pulse in order for a payout to occur. Could be wrong but I see no other logical reason to keep these last few stores open.
While you may not have thought of this reason, here it is: They haven't all closed. That would be the same answer for How does Amazon still exist? It hasn't closed.
