Thread regarding VMware layoffs

Those who left

I am procrastinating leaving because I really loved this job. It's hard for me to find a better offer. However, so many of my colleagues with whom I loved to work have left, so this is now a totally different workplace. For those who left, I'm curious how are you doing now in your new companies?

I left recently; it was hard as I was comfortable. That was the worst part. Now that I left, I forgot there is life outside VMW. Yes, there are still moments I miss, honestly though I am not missing the quarterly reorgs, BAU statements and near zero leadership direction. Anyway recommend people doing what is best for them. Ride it out or GTFO. Only thing I will say; I didn’t leave only because of Broadcom I left for where VMW is NOW. It’s not very good place to be IMO.

I’m in the final stages of getting out. The strange thing is I will get a title increase but a slight decrease in remuneration. But better to get out than wait for my entire function to get outsourced.

Everyone has to take their own situation into account. I left in a lateral move and could not be happier. I left prior to the acquisition took place so the BC thing had nothing to do with it. My biggest concern was my conclusion that VMW has become a legacy, old school, limited growth and limited innovation company. In my view, they are light years behind the curve in modern software innovation, both on a technology and financial front. And by financial, I mean how companies purchase and consume sw TODAY. There is nothing wrong in the sense of milking the install base. VMW was incredibly successful with vSphere and there is huge install base. Maybe BC will bring the innovation that todays market requires. I expect they will certainly bring the cost structure required to hit their stated goals. But in any case, from a career perspective I wanted to work for a more innovative company. Some thrive in dinosaur environments while others need something different. It really is a personal decision. There are options out there for both. And I have seen people thrive in both. Good luck with whatever direction you take.

With annual layoffs at VMware - almost without fail - I am always surprised how people can build such an emotional connection with VMware - it's just another company. Sure - the packages are good but personally it didn't stop me from getting annual anxiety and wonder if I am part of the lot that gets their a-s kicked.

I am talking in the present - actually I left now but still - you decide your own future. Either wait and see what happens and don't cry if you get laid off and take what comes, or leave - simple.

Tech companies always have turnover. It's nothing new.

People that have left because of the merger are in the minority. Most turnover employees have been planning before then as it takes months and months to find something worthwhile.

On insider boards turnover stands at 10-15%, give or take fluctuations (a smidge above average). It's not a concern except for those reqs that need backfilling. Nobody knows when those taps will be open, as most of the Valley if following the "frozen hiring" route until the economy clarifies.

No sense in holding on over nostalgia, those good times we had certainly were worth it, but they’re gone now. GTFO before the company and/or the economy collapse.

Curious why you can’t find a better offer. Did you recently join and got a big bump from your last role? I left for Amazon and got a 50% bump. Sure I miss my old team and I reflect fondly on those times, but like all things they come to and end at some point. VMware has always been known to pay roughly in the middle of the pack and long timers like I was will feel underpaid more than others I suppose.
