If it is, it should be super important right? Why do they want to spin it off? I can't imagine the future of vSphere+ if we don't support Kubernetes.

VMware has spent the last decade in decline. Our core business was too big and it allowed us to fritter time, money and opportunity away. Now the grim reaper is here. And the party is over.
Worse, it is a non SaaS layer on top of SaaS products so basically all the benefits of SaaS go away. It also offers functionality that is so meager on top of base kubernetes, it is in no way worth the effort. Vmware can’t deliver a SaaS product, period. They don’t have anyone in Tanzu that has a proven skill set in that area.
Only those customers who either 1) just take whatever vmware offers or 2) dream of hyperscaler portability as the highest attainable goal will be interested.
The 10% market share won’t impress, not to mention the Tanzu name has been slapped on such a diverse set of tech, the name has no unified meaning.
Tanzu is not competitive with GKE, AKS and the like. People are wondering "if we need Kubernetes why not get the real deal?" so Tanzu is having a hard time getting a foothold. Tan's strategy is "Number 1, Number 2 or OUT!" so the writing is on the wall.
Tanzu sure comes up a LOT.
If previous statements about BC CEO hold any water, the fact that in a blog recap of VMExplore he didn’t mention Tanzu at all, I’d guess that is not a good sign, especially since there was quite a production made of Tanzu in the keynote/opening.
Because the implementation and sales teams don't know how to do anything with it.
The idea is good. The implementation is stupid. It's supposed to make things simpler yet it's the opposite.
