Can someone please help me understand what Raghu did over his many years at VMware, that made him worthy of so many promotions, and eventually the CEO position?

Raghu and Kit were promoted so that no one still left at VMW would miss management once Broadcom takes over.
He was paid to say this at VMExplore
“Our employees know what the roadmap ahead is, and we have continuous communication with our employees in understanding what’s going on, and so they’re all kept up to date all the time,” he said. “They are more or less focused on the job at hand
Apparently, less is more

No one need to be able to appoint him. With his $50m+ severance he can retire.
RAG........WHO...
He is a real life Mr. Magoo
Michael Dell says jump Raghu asks how high?
The perfect yes man to sell the company into pieces while providing smoke and mirrors "focusing" on the "Main Thing" and ESG.
Worst communication skills i've seen of any leader in 20 years in tech, cant even get the words out half the time - no idea who would appoint him and congratulate themselves that's it was a good idea. Good technologist sure but not in a public leadership position. Just lots of buzzwords and soundbites. I would'nt put him in charge of my coffee machine let alone a 12 billion dollar company. Then again he's not the only one, Sumit made a mess of Customer Success then suddenly gets promoted to President? WHY???????
Early on (10+ years ago) he helped guide vCenter/vSphere development. 5 years ago, engineers still bowed down to him. Knew nothing about how to launch and grow SaaS offerings, but they still promoted him. And here we are.
He kept the main thing the main thing -- which was destroy shareholder value. And put a coffin in VMware as a once great company.
It takes a skillful management to run a company well.
The management of vmware is more a group of people who listen (without understanding) to issues, and then encourage you, in private, to continue making progress on whatever you are doing.
If you need their support, they give it. In private. But they never follow through and make it a goal of any sort, with any sort of public support.
This is why there is no coherence to anything that happens -- because management is floating around like a leaf on a draining bathtub.
Oh, and also there have been a lot of amazingly incompetent people hired, and put in charge of important projects.
He focused on the "Main Thing"
