Thread regarding 2U Inc. layoffs

South Africa taking over curriculum development, engineering, and tech

Job postings will be appearing in early to middle September on popular career websites. Teams are being structured currently, starting with administrative and management roles. All U.S. personnel will be affected and are expected to be receiving formal notices in October. Please do not hate the messenger.

Operations are done-done, but Curriculum Development for boot camps was specifically placed in the Platform/Product org so while CD layoffs seem done everywhere else, that doesn't seem to be the case for boot camps. That's why it seems so back and forth.

The non-Operations spaces that are getting cuts through the end of the year are Platform/Product and Marketing/Sales which does include tech/engineering, boot camp curriculum development, and marketing roles. That doesn't mean South Africa is taking over those jobs, though.

This is clearly posted by a disgruntled employee that was let go. This will never happen. And also engineering is part of tech... this guy has no idea what he's talking about.

Clarification that I heard there were layoff in SA, not that whole team was cut.

It seems the curriculum team in SA has also been cut, from what I hear from a connection there?

This all stinks so bad. Saying I'm disappointed is a euphemism.

So after all the support for curriculum development was chopped in the first phase, the people that are currently working to keep the curriculum up-to-date in the US will be gone for both Degree and Boot Camp divisions across the board even if told they were 'done-done'? (Why I am surprised that it may be an empty promise is beyond me at this point).

This makes sense considering the last fatal blows to the support for US-based curriculum teams, but I have to wonder at what point the product that was sold to university partners no longer exists or has been fundamentally changed.

The sunshine up your b-m story of "these changes are good" and better for partners seems a bit hollow if not an all-out sleight of hand.

But maybe I have just drunk enough Kool-Aid to the point that I am deliriously teetering off the edge of reason and any semblance of sanity in this mess.

Also, I am sorry. There are a lot of great people who don't deserve this and worked against a lot of cr-p to try to give students something to make their money worth it.

This makes it seem like there will be a "runway" of sorts of roles slowing down (so people may be told they have until March 2023 before their role is completely terminated.

As far as being told you're don-done, if one of the VP/SVP posts from this board is true, we're looking down a year of layoffs and restructuring. In fact, if the platform company comes to fruition as described, the majority of the workforce is likely to be deemed redundant regardless of whether or not their team was told they're "done-done" (which I want to believe, I really do - but it's all sadly laughable)

The Curriculum Development team (for Degrees at least) was told their round of layoffs was done-done and many teams were slashed in half ... there are also teams that currently work with folks in CT. This suggests that's NOT true ... so why were we reassured?...

You know what, I have answered my own question

Hmm ... this makes sense but is obviously very broad, do you have any additional detail about what this means? IT seems clear but also it's a lot to take in! So literally, every single person currently in the department formerly known as "Tech" will be laid off? Are there any roles or teams that will remain?
