Those of us who are trying to exit before the sh-t hits the fan have good reasons for it. First of all, I know my self-worth and I have self-esteem that doesn't allow me to let others decide my fate if I can do anything about it. Additionally, leaving on my own will help me avoid months of stress, which is crucial to my overall health due to my several medical conditions. And finally, I have enough money saved up that severance doesn't play that big of a role in my decision-making. I'm sorry that's not the case for everybody, but for me it is and it gives me the freedom to do whatever the he-l I want.

I've been through a layoff before. It's not as bad as it's being laid out to be. Employers still hiring are actually sympathetic. You get a great reason for why you are leaving, which can other wise be tricky to answer. I was waiting to leave a toxic workplace and this gave me the perfect reason! :) Also, employers know that being laid off has nothing to do with the value an employee creates. It's purely a business decision where entire teams are knocked off. For the dude who's saved more than the severance... that's awesome... really wish I could say that too! For the rest of us lesser mortals, severance is a good strategy. I got laid off during the sub-prime crisis (much worse than this... was an absolute blood bath and was during the Thanksgiving/Christmas holiday season) and I was still able to find another employer in under 40 days. So it's doable. Good luck to all. If you are let go, something better is waiting for you... you just don't know it yet.
What I am getting tired of is people moaning and moaning. Leave or stay and do your work you get still paid for.
Deciding to chill out and stick with it until the close is one’s own decision, just like it is to leave. One is really not more “I’m in control of my own future” than the other. The people posting their opinions here aren’t forcing you to do anything either.
You say:
…, if your termination date matches the date of layoff, your future employer may put two and two together and then there goes your future job opportunity...
What does this mean? I don’t believe any company will care that someone was laid off by Broadcom. They laid off over 8,000 people at CA and most of them are working.
Or am I not reading this post correctly?
EXACTLY! Also, if your termination date matches the date of layoff, your future employer may put two and two together and then there goes your future job opportunity...
I will never need severance so badly so as to forego a chance at a future and probably better job. Why wait to be kicked out to be given a handout that may or may not be that great?
Pretty much. I left last month. For the same reason. It is only me that determines my future. I had a great five years at VMware but at the end of the day it is just another job. For me VMware started to go downhill at or around vRA 8 release (based on my job) and in fact I applied weeks before the announcement. Having said that, after, I accelerated it and got something. I am sick of people moaning about Bcom. Either shut up and stay and wait or bloody leave. Your future, your call.
Thanks for that.
