Just curious, are there any cases that severance could be denied? In the system (today) I'm a remote employee. I don't live anywhere near a Citrix or Tibco office. If I don't go back on October 1, do you think there is any risk of severance being denied? Can they legally do that? Also - what's the current severance package. I can't find these details anywhere.

Standard severance for Sr Directors and below. VP level above you have different employment contracts that are negotiated individually.
Also depends on your level. There are standard packages for Directors and above. The benefits increase based on your level.

The answer depends on where you work. If you work in an international location, local laws around severance indemnities will apply. If you are a US employee, there is no mandatory minimum severance payable and your employment is “at will”. Consequently, the company can fire a US employee at will at any time. Granted, companies do try to avoid lawsuits by creating restructuring plans and substantiating your dismissal as an operational realignment. In those situations, the company would pay severance unless you are fired for cause, in which case you will not get paid. With respect to the severance benefits you would be eligible if fired without cause, looking at the merger agreement, severance benefits are paid using the Citrix formula if the dismissal is without cause during the one year anniversary of the deal closing.
there's no legal requirement that you are entitled to a severance. They can do whatever they want.
If you are in Workday as remote, you're good at least until they "re-evaluate" whether you can continue as remote, per the statement on Backstage right now.
Also, they can't just fire you "for cause" with no warning. They need to go through some kind of "improvement plan" pantomime first. That will at least buy you a little time to make your choices.
Your manager will tell you what you need to do, if anything. Obviously there's no place for you, personally, to go on October 1. The specifics are going to depend on where you are. That RTO announcement was poorly worded and confusing.
