What's the worst thing that can happen if you're laid off? You are forced to find a new job (while you are given some money to make the transition easier) that is guaranteed to turn out to be better than what you have right now in this joke of a company. Where is the downside?

You should be receiving 3-6 months of salary and 6-12 months of healthcare coverage plus option to purchase Cobra. This will give you runway to find your next gig. Again not a pleasant process but at the end, hopefully a better job in a new place.
When my mortgage and car loan people come looking for payment, I’ll just tell them “stop worrying so much”
Also, if you're not yet a permanent resident, you could end up having to leave the country. Depending on your situation, there might or might not be significant downsides.
Also, some people can't afford to go without paychecks for very long. Plus then you're paying for health insurance on your own and with families, that cost can be sky-high.
The top 2 that come to mind - thought of starting over somewhere new, the real threat of a looming recession in which new-hires could be the first cut.
