Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Any salaried person still working for Ford is a su---r

Why would you stay at this lousy company? I quit in 2007 and never looked back. I left because there wasn’t any money to go around. And when there was a scrap from the table, it went to the UAW. That’s right, I have an engineering degree from a top university and those high school dropout junkies that work the line were in front of me for a meager raise.

In the “good years” where Ford didn’t lose as much money as they could have, I could get a $600 bonus as a GSR 8 engineer. If I worked 100 hours per week. I could get an “outstanding” rating. With that rating I could bump my raise from 1% to 2.5%. After taxes, I would be better off mowing my neighbors lawn for cash and I would have the extra 40-60 hours back each week that I wasted away on the launch or whatever. I could have stuck around for the pension, but with Ford’s balance sheet, it’s highly likely the pension won’t ever materialize because it’s underfunded for salary employees.

Anyone who has hope that a Ford career will result in success is blindly optimistic. The ones that got laid off are the lucky ones. This company will never get you where you want to be. Quit now and cut the losses! You won’t regret it!

@hzg+1iQ44z0t I respect the technicians and line workers I've worked with but holy sh-t have a few of them fu---d up things in ways that shouldn't have been possible. Characterizing any group by the low performers is a bad idea.

@OP All I can say is your experience regarding pay doesn't match mine. Glad you found something that was a better fit.

To paraphrase a comment I've seen in another auto forum - the OEMs got the unions they deserved.

"Just a bunch of degreed people telling each other how smart they are..."

This sounds like connected vehicle in model e. LL3, LL4s and LL5s are all buddies. And they SIRP'd anyone not in the buddy group, and protected their friends. Anytime there is a job opening, another buddy is moved on up. Look at the recent promotion to LL4 over there. Yep, another buddy!

White. Male. You're good to go.

Female. Not white. Not a beer drinking, burger gorging buddy? You gone!

I retired last year as a salaried technician with 31 yrs. Ford is not the same company I hired into that's for sure. That being said, I would not disparage the people working on the line. These people went back to work as did we when the engineers were "working from home". How many still are? If you have never worked the line you don't know what it's like. I have. I have never seen anything great coming out of sci lab, for example, Just a bunch of degreed people telling each other how smart they are...

I agree - why is OP trolling this board if your life is so awesome elsewhere?

Good for you, but don’t you have better things to do with your time?

Maybe Ford is the su---r.

I work for the secondary income in my family, so this is an awesome place for me. I’ve been here over 20 years, can do my job with minimal stress - work my hours each week and get out. I like my coworkers, but the management is not so good. I stay because I am not yet retirement eligible. I am part of the GRP crew. I would retire and take the lump sum now if I could.

The cost / stress of moving to a new job in my late 40s isn’t worth it. I do plan to retire as soon as eligible.

Also note - I am not a slacker, I enjoy supporting my team and educating the new generation. I also learn from the younger coworkers :)

I do realize I’m probably in a unique position not needing this job (or any), but that is the result of getting a solid technical engineering education (with masters at Ford’s expense) and maxing out 401k since I was first employed and Roth IRAs while eligible. Both my spouse and I max everything possible. Prioritize paying off your house(s) and car(s) and live healthy so you don’t have huge medical expenses. Save for your kids from their birth in the most tax advantageous way.

Start young - time is the biggest passive wealth builder.

Good luck to all! But realize people have reasons for going down with the S.S. Ford.

Gotta love how the company ra-raers are always calling the reality posters trolls. I believe every word he says. I've been concerned that they are going to freeze it convert pensions ever since 2009 when GM and Chrysler Ford for bankruptcy and got a lot of their debt and liability removed. We are seeing the results of that now with those companies doubling our margins.

If I wasn't a pension eligible salaried employee I'd probably be looking. If they convert or freeze the pension I'm out of here. The last 5 1/2 years here have been brutal. Hackett started the mess, Farley has made it worse.

You never looked back? Until you found time in your life 15 years after you left to post on this board? Haha.

To the OP

And 15 years after you left Ford you have nothing more compelling or creative to do with your life other than troll this board? Sounds like you,re obsessed with something that just does not care about you.
I am proud of the work I’ve done at Ford, especially with Alan mullaly at the helm right after you left in 2007. We all pulled together and got thru it, without your help.
Ford has had challenges and successes since then.
We assess our need to retire on a quarter by quarter basis based on what’s best for us and our situation. There is more potential for Ford to be successful and more risks for failure.
Either way Ford has been better off without you in particular.
