Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Leaving dell and rejoining

Did anyone leave Dell for some time and then decided to come back? Are they welcoming? I heard it is the best way to get a promotion.

Know many people coming back for a second, third take at Dell. Good way to get more experience across different types of roles and the industry, plus you get a bigger pay raise. The learning curve is steep as a newbie so you have an advantage over them with your Dell experience, especially if you left on OK terms.

I was laid off just before the pandemic hit, I planned a year off and a return to the same team, one of the managers promised me role. He got laid off, so I got a role somewhere else, so glad I did, a 35% raise and a non toxic environment.

Yes. We will hire someone back in that didnt blot the copy book on the way out. Why? They know Dell and how to manage the grind/people/13 week cycle. Thats half the job. It means you can start them fast and not risk them burning out in 3 months of starting. We hire people back in often who have resigned and gone competitive.

Quite often people coming back are happier and also more respected. Maybe the reason they left has gone, maybe they have adjusted attitude, maybe the new role back at Dell is a career advancement they would not have got had they stayed. But yes this is normal.

@2lhy+1iPJJeGw Yeah.Means they can cut commision and will save on packages as staff will leave once OTE drops.
Any sales staff that are pretty good will leave.

Anyone else getting their quotas raised while Dell is communicating to the market lower expectation?

I left Dell after a 7 year run. Went to a competitor for a raise like everyone else does. I came back and found it to be worse than when I left. OTE was better. Of course with Dell what you negotiate coming in the door is about where you’ll be forever. However in the midst of record profits Dell is ja--ing quotas and laying off experienced, well performing team members. I should not have come back.

I got laid off from storage and came back a year later in networking, frankly it was a mistake. Dell never treated me or the overlays with any respect and I should have just moved on.

Tons of folks leave Dell and come back. It’s called boomeranging. A wise person once said the best raise you’ll get at Dell is when you leave and come back.

I don't think there's a way to join back to the company without looking bad. If your intent is to leverage a company to get a promotion for Dell, then I highly doubt the company would want you back. That wouldn't look good.

If you try to join back to your previous team, the manager wouldn't even bother. If you try to join back to a new team, the hiring manager will probably ask you who your previous manager was.

The only way I can someone coming back to the company is if admit that they messed up and would like to come back, without a promotion.

Think about it in a manager's perspective:

Why would I hire someone back who only used another company to try to get promoted here? Why couldn't they just perform to the expected level that can justify a promotion? Nope. Forget it. I'll hire someone who respects me and whom I am confident in promoting because they can contribute to the company.

This is a ridiculous question quite frankly.
