Is Broadcom promoting people based on merit? At VMware, going up the ladder means a lot of shoulder rubbing and a-s kissing and not so much hard work and experience. If working for Broadcom means that my work will be properly rewarded and I don't have to play any games outside of it to advance my career, I'll be ecstatic when they take over.

The existing Broadcom software business units have already been told that this next fiscal year is going to be "lean". So the meager number of promotions provided in the past (I heard numbers like +-25% of requested promotions were granted), should be even less going forward.
The bigger the title, the more approvals will be needed in order to make that happen. Your boss is correct in that you need to make sure upper management know who you are and what you've done to deserve that promotion. Your boss doesn't make the final call.
Broadcom is very promotion-heavy. They promote office work, gouging customers, and layoffs
Same .. When I talked to boss about promotions I was told I need to ensure his bosses boss knows me better otherwise it won't happen.

Well I had my face shown to entire company through presentations, tech talks and what not. And still not promoted. So yes, how your manager compares you with others within your team in terms of his/her 'likeness' matters the most. My manager may like me but she likes others who got promoted more than me. And by like, its not the skills - its just how much others made a god out of her. Thats how it works within vmware. Doesn't matter to me anymore really, since I have lost all hopes. In my eye, I know my worth.
vmware promotions are deeply broken. They generally promote the loudest flashiest peacocks who do terrible work, and then move on to another project. Or, they promote people who cause major products to be recalled.
Very little merit in promotions, and a lot of 'old boys' club.
Hopefully not like the CTOA program I had comments on my application that said "you are a perfect fit but you should join a pod." Not sure how a "pod" is relevant to my ability to make an impact. "You should do more diversity outreach in your area" again not sure how that is relevant.
I hear you. I'm a top performer but my boss made it apparent that being good isn't good enough. They told me that I need to learn to "kiss a** more". 🤣 Wtf. I had never been told that before. I think I'm incapable of doing it honestly. I'd welcome Broadcom if they value results over kiss a**.
Well said! As a leader of a team I find it so frustrating that to promote members of my team there is a need to ‘network with stakeholders’ rather than promote on capability and a job well done, consistently. If your face isn’t know by ‘key people’ you have a battle. For those that are introverted that’s a really challenge - so much for DEI.
