It's been nearly four weeks since my second interview and I've heard nothing from them. Both interviews went really well and I was told to expect to be called in for a third. Nothing since then. I did send an email after two weeks passed but never got a response. How often does this happen? It's really disheartening to be completely ignored. How hard is it to send a simple reply to say I didn't get a job?

I get ghosted all the time. It could be you are a runner up but they are waiting to confirm acceptance from their first choice candidate. That may explain why they haven't said anything to you yet. But it could also be bad planning on their end too. Keep looking.
Uhm gonna be blunt here....suck it up.
Finding a job is about playing the odds. As a hiring manager, things can take time, or get held up due to numerous reasons. If you want a job faster, you should be interviewing with more places. But don't make the mistake so many do, and think because you have multiple interviews you are going to get the job. You should always assume you ARE NOT getting the job until you do.
Also, I know this is hard, but you have to learn not to take things personally. I've had many times when I did not hire my preferred candidate because I needed a different skill set at the time, or I couldn't get the salary approved the person wanted, etc.
If you get a 2nd or 3rd interview, then take that as you have the skills and are a good candidate. They wouldn't waste their time interviewing you if you weren't. But you have to be the right fit at the right time. So again, suck it up, and stop banking on a couple of roles.
Who cares. Suck it up and get back out there. What do you think an actor goes through? Would you rather they replied to you saying “you suck”?
