Thread regarding Teradata Corp. layoffs

Let's start a new narrative...

I can assure you what I am about to say is not a form of euphoria. Nor am I an HR troll trying to inject falsehoods hear to prop our company up. I have a difficult role with many tight deadlines and many missing pieces that would be considered commonplace at other companies. From what I have experienced so far, it would be easy for me to fall into the quagmire that exists on this site. But I am excited to be here. I have worked for some of the largest companies where there was little change or little chance to make a difference. I have also worked at startups pulling "all-nighters" to work on launches that could make or break a company. This is an inflection point for our company and a rare opportunity we all have to make a difference in our roles. We have the best solution based over 40yrs of leading the market. Cloud is just a platform, an infrastructure that we had to adapt to. The "shiny newness" of our born-in-the-cloud competitors will wane as will our perception of being late to cloud. Nothing compares to our years of optimization and proven value in our key markets. We are hiring some of the best and brightest people and I am constantly amazed by the backgrounds of new people I am meeting monthly. All I have to say is, if you need the comfort of a company where everything is "handed" to you to execute, this is not the place for you. But if you are excited about the opportunity to be a part of a once in a career opportunity to drive change, especially for a significantly undervalued company, keep focused on the "prize" and let's do this!!

If you look at this thread, it seems TD got "45-48" employees to troll this post? I swear my company's layoff page is the MOST ACTIVE on this site, and there's a reason for that. Any troll 'up voting' upon request won't change what's happening here behind the scenes.

I am amused... I think there must have been a sudden influx of Tera-turtles to downvote some of the posts and upvote others...

EVIDENCE: Take a look at this post, the direction of travel on some of the votes has been 100% reversed from a few days ago, and the number of votes too, compared to a usual post is out of whack.

Only a few conclusions to draw from this...

"Shill, also called a plant or a stooge, is a person who publicly helps or gives credibility to a person or organization without disclosing that they have a close relationship with said person or organization"

This above definition is the opposite of my state. I know the risks, but believe we can turn this around. I am public about why I am here, and I work everyday to I champion those around me. I am proud to be Teradata and proud of all that my team is doing to push Teradata back to the top.

Blast that as much as you want - it doesn't deter me.

I can't believe the shilling on this thread. How much is TD paying you to write / up vote propaganda and down vote truth? When you were back in elementary school and the teacher asked "What do you want to be when you grow up?" I doubt you or anyone else said "I want to be a Shill" but here you are. Sad. In any event, I completely agree with 1xik+1iKH2LQw. I worked with a lot of the engineers that worked on the new platform and have no doubt they built something incredible. Unfortunately, that's not enough to compensate for an incredibly weak leadership team. In fact, now that the new platform has been delivered, it wouldn't surprise me if the engineers that built it end up getting pink slips because the best engineers also tend to be the most expensive.

As someone working on the next gen platform, I'm bemused by those posting here indicating its a failure before its even been released. To those who believe its just a point upgrade, I suggest you dive deeper. The ability to scale out within a matter of minutes, then scale down when the task is done, is a customer dream come true. Considering this effort is only 2.5 years old, with less than 100 contributors for most of that time, the results are astonishing, especially for a company that needs 6 months and 20 employees to ship an empty box.

But despite my amazement at what's been achieved, I have to curb my enthusiasm when confronted by the reality that current mgmt is not competent to be successful selling it, especially against real competition. Also the lack of resources to scale the team is becoming a problem, as is the desperation to ship it before its enterprise ready.Yet I know this company needs to dump 30+% of headcount to get back to real profitability, or for any possibility of acquisition. I fear that Teradata's best new product in nearly 2 decades will ultimately become a great product for another company.

Let's wait another 2 quarters - then look at the revenue figures. Let's count the number of new customers. If things head south - then we can always do a RIF and repeat..

There are only so many times you can spin a bad position.

OP, I am 100% with you.

I come to this site regularly and am sad to see people dive to the worst possible conclusion. Yes, we have an enormous amount to go do, but I am here to do it, and I am thankful to know there are people like you are here as well.

The other posters here have legitimate points, but it is a portion of a perspective. The exact same thing could be done with any other competitor or product, picking on specific issues and placing them in the worst possible light. For us, our differentiation is not simply in our latest release - but our latest release removes some major customer objections and barriers to adoption. Our leadership knows this, and is working to shout this from the rooftops, while we all continue to triple down on our analytic, scale, workload management capabilities, and more, while we also massively improve our ease of use.

We won't change everyone's mind. Hopefully those that are just milking the system will leave or will be fired. We will keep on working to succeed and I believe we will be proven right.

Too late. Competitors can auto convert 95+ % of your code to a real cloud platform in a matter of months. Competitors already hired away most of your top talent. Customers despise you for what you have done to them over the years. Now they can leave you and they can’t do it quick enough. AE’s are selling their final renewal deals with the customers that are left. That’s the new narrative.

I understand your point of view, but I have to respectfully disagree.
Teradata has squandered their technological lead. Their latest release is not cloud native nor is a significant engineering change. It is evolutionary, not revolutionary. Teradata needed revolutionary. I know they spent a long time putting this together but I think they fell short. It was a lack of vision and leadership. Now they are trying to recover the story through a new layer of marketing paint. Very, very unfortunate.
It doesn't help that the ELT went on a boondoggle to Wall Street and then bragged about it on the media and LinkedIn. Nothing of what they did helped with the company's position, its message or the morale of the employees. In fact, I would argue that it did exactly opposite. It was a mistake.
When you say 'if you need the comfort of a company where everything is "handed" to you to execute', you are talking about sort of effort done in start ups. I don't think I have to tell you that startups also have enormous rewards for those efforts. Except for the very top of the pyramid, Teradata doesn't have those types of rewards to offer to the rank and file.
It hurts to type this. Teradata hasn't done anything original in a long time. They have been coasting on that since they basically created MPP. They have the people with the smarts, but don't have the leadership to capitalize on that.
