Thread regarding Juniper Networks Inc. layoffs

Juniper vs Cisco

I worked at Juniper. Left because of management change. The manager I had was inexperienced and a bully. Went to Cisco. Was good there for a while and then, guess what? Management change and the same narcissist behavior started. On top of that there is always a fear of layoffs - people are very conscious about that and talks about it all the time. Tolerated the psychopathic management for a year and a half and then left.

Take away: Juniper benefits are better. Cisco has more elbow room and you can move around better internally as it's a much bigger company.

Common issue: if you are not a VP or a CxO, then in both cases, it's who you report to. Same as most other places.

Morale: same sh!t, different stink.

I never understood why Juniper people leave for Cisco and vice versa. There are hundreds of tech companies that are significantly better than these two. Tech skills are adaptable to a much broader market that pays real money. If you want to stay in networking there are still other superior choices. It's like people who work at Dell think their only choices are IBM and HP.

@1krl+1iIx6P74 Car allowance is about 20% higher at Juniper. More RSUs. If you are lucky enough to have a good manager at Juniper, as I was the first couple years of my tenure there, then you can grow really well as managers do have some say in your future. However, Juniper , at least during my time, did not give you a day off on your birthday, which Cisco does.

At Cisco managers have almost no power. They are just messengers and paper pushers of the upper management. At best they can get you some RSUs every year if really indulge in some serious bu-t-ki$$ing but the value of those are insignificant to the extent that you won’t reconsider quitting just because of the RSUs. Career development at Cisco almost stalls after Grade 10 and beyond that you become an unwanted OPEX overhead and a potential layoff target. That Constant LR threat hanging like the sword of Damocles is quite a thing and not conducive to everyone’s mental well being.
