Thread regarding VMware layoffs

Is the manager trying to convince you that you will be safe?

I heard from a colleague that the manager is trying to convince few of them that their positions will be safe. If this is true and if they are trying to retain some people in this way, then it's really shameful.

Also, those who ask here about the security of their positions, probably in the hope of keeping their jobs, are making a huge mistake because they should use that time to look for other opportunities. You should never be lulled into a belief about a safe job. I thought we had all learned that by now.

I think for some of us who have tenure if we got laid off we would get a healthy severance. If you are brand new to the company and work in a BU that is seen as redundant then I would be looking for a new gig sooner than later. But should always plan for the worse and hope for the best because just like any job even if Broadcom didn't buy us we could still get laid off.

You guys are smart. Our Director pulled me and a manager into his office and we were told we were safe and who would be laid off on our teams.

We were both laid off and he was laid off the next year.

If my manager would tell me that I’d ask for it signed in blood by hook personally.

I am sure that quite a few folks are safe and also business-critical. Nothing wrong with VMware trying to retain them, although talk is cheap (at any level). Best way to retain is by appropriately paying for high-visibility roles in crucial projects.
