Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Maybe it's best to leave the industry

I haven't been in the railroad for a long time, but if working in other companies is similar to working at UP, then it would be best for me to try to find a job in another industry. It would be interesting if we had data on how many people left UP for another railroad company, and how many sought opportunities in other fields.

I personally know of three people that went to another RR, only to quit about a year later because of the same thing happening there. None of them ever continued in the rail industry. That's what the RR execs still don't get. The old saying of we can always find more people is blowing up in there face. What did they honestly expect would happen? You can't pi-s off and lay off your employees, then seriously expect them to come running back when they're called. These people have lives and families of their own to manage, and can't afford to stand by waiting for the RR's to quit playing games.

I have over 20yrs in. After college I got an entry level job $35K starting + benefits. I worked construction jobs thru school, wasnt afraid to get dirty. Applied and hired on w/ RR and more than doubled my pay overnight. For years I didnt regret it, but now I wouldnt do it again. It didnt used to be this bad, biggest thing is we used to have more people. Workloads increased but man power decreased. That and the pay didnt keep up.
