Thread regarding Google Inc. layoffs

Non performing R&D

What I find amazing is how few of us actually work in R&D in google where we are contributing to the revenue of the company. It's like a social club where we do cool things, none of which is important. And the 3 people in the back toiling away on the part of the company that actually pays the bills finally got fed up with us.

I'm not opposed to this, mind you, but It would be good if senior management actually figured out how to monetize the non-performing R&D, rather than just cut.

That's actually how it is every medium to large sized company. Furthermore, the people who do the least amount of work and/or are the technically competent are promoted because of their "people/soft" skills. In companies like Google perhaps this mindset has its roots in the interview process where you are asked programming puzzles that have no relevancy to the actual work you'll be doing.
