Thread regarding VMware layoffs

Acquired skills

Earlier, I was too confident that the skills learned here will put me ahead of others once I decide to go job hunting. But now that I am actively looking for a new job, I get the impression that the skills I acquired at VMW are insufficient. I would like to hear from others here, how satisfied are you with the skillset acquired here.

Depending on where your BU. If your experience is EUC, your skills wont be that desirable in the market. The experience yes but the technical skills wont. If you are in VCF for example or VMware Cloud on Azure and you deal with cloud solutions your skills will be very desirable.

The wait and see approach is valuable for folks who have done time here. This will give us many months of severance. We can start our job search then. Layoffs are not the end of the world. Been there and survived it.

This is how your skills stack up.

VMware vSphere

I think you have to at least be proficient on a cloud platform, AWS, Azure, or GCP and at least one automation technology such as Terraform or Ansible to be marketable.

vSphere Admins are the new Windows Admins of the early 2010s.

If you are solely relying on the skills and experience you acquire at your current role and company, and don’t have the gumption or foresight to learn other things or improve yourself outside of VMware… then frankly I can see why companies are not interested in you

Sorry. But if you really thought, at this day of age, that VMware skills are sufficient on the job market, then you lived under a rock. I think a lot of guys that are currently waiting and see what happens, will get a wake up call when it comes to job search.

I learned how to take a four hour lunch break. I’m satisfied.
