Please see comment in “thinking about the 2u layoffs” topic- and consider not being a jerk in a space with hundreds of people who are through layoffs. How in any way is that impacting student debt? Your time, energy and agenda are not for this space, Dahn (anyone reading- just google this guy and his handle - so you who the troll is and can add that to your toolbox on who’s opinion to consider in the future). The higher ed world is a big one, Mr Dahn - you aren’t doing yourself - or students frankly- any service with your behavior on this site). You are just outing your inability to be a thoughtful human.

@1yyc+1i1tQaNC, imagine how stressful it has been for student debtors, especially in fields like social work and education. #radicalempathy

Right. Sometimes it’s hard to place people and it’s definitely easier to do with pre-established partnerships that ground programs have built for decades. Harder to find doesn’t mean the ultimate placement is “worse” than on ground- particularly bc something local to the student could actually become a job where they ultimately get to serve their own community (vs the DC community, for example). Should people not be able to move to DC to do a nursing degree at Georgetown on campus- why should they not have the ability to stay in their home state with their families (the biggest diff with many of these students is that most aren’t right out of undergrad and are further along in life such that they couldn’t just pick up and move). I do think sometimes things move quickly and it puts a lot of pressure on internal teams (like placement) to the point that the job can get really stressful. The reason it’s stressful is bc of how determined the team is to place everyone on time and the student experience matters. That goal is a good one. Are there things that could be done to make it less stressful for the team? 100.

Degrees were not the same as on ground. Used to work in clinical placement which was promised to students in their area before they enrolled without 2U understanding the climate of clinical placements in different regions. Two or more 2U programs (SW, nursing, counseling) were often competing against each other for placements. Oh and we couldn’t place online students at the sites used by the on ground programs which limited opportunities.

Every degree program 2u has is fully accredited by the same accrediting body as the ground programs on the university it’s a part of- and all admissions decisions are made 100% by the school/curriculum is designed with school professors and must be good enough to be accredited- even more so with licensure programs (counseling/social work/nursing etc) Corinthian/itt tech etc - no. The issues with those schools were that people paid a ton of money for the programs without realizing the lack of accreditation meant their credits didn’t even transfer to accredited schools. Now the cost to income ratio- that’s a thing and should always be considered by students. There are a LOT of students who decide not to pursue masters’ degrees in social sciences from highly ranked schools just for that reason. The programs do not cost more than the parallel ground program - and provide some benefits that a ground program can’t. Let’s give a little credit to students for making choices for themselves, no? Questioning the cost and too of higher Ed in general: yes. Question whether even top ranked faculty created curriculum is “worth it” online vs ground - okay. Acting like 2u is pedaling cr-p degree programs or tricking students into paying 100k plus for a program - no. You are just flat wrong. At least get your facts straight.

As it turns out, 2U was very similar to Corinthian Colleges, ITT Tech, the Art Institutes, and University of Phoenix, just taking it to a different level. Did anyone here feel guilty about selling $115,000 degrees in social work? Or have they left 2U already?
