No matter how hard-working you are and how committed you present yourself to your boss, you will not get that promotion you're aiming for. There's somebody already selected through their familial/friendly connections for any opening you might be eying. All you're achieving is setting up a threshold you'll be judged on in the future and you won't be able to scale down without consequences. Just don't do it.

Your missing the biggest point. More hours at work = less at home with the whiney wife and kids. Not doing it for a promotion, it's for stress relief.
