Why does Microsoft pay less if compared to other large technology companies (Google, Amazon, etc.)? What's driving this position?

Microsoft is big and some orgs are better than other. I've worked at Azure core where I was abused to the point that I've worked six consecutive weekends. I've worked in the office org as well, that was not good too as they are disorganized and things are broken over there.
Before you make any statement on pay you need to calculate how much is the average resource paid per hour. I think we pay per hour much more than othe companies (like Amazon or Google) that make you work 80 hours per week. I think we have a better deal over here. The work/life balance really exists here - there is more job security here, it's easier to get promoted here, etc. We have less attrition here as well. Just look at the revloving door at Amazon, people hardly last a year or two over there. Anyhow, OP, I think the premise you base your question on is flawed.
