Thread regarding Commscope Inc. layoffs

Balanced View on CommScope

The leadership team responsible for the last two major acquisitions, BNS and ARRIS, is no longer at CommScope. It is true that the last two major acquisitions failed to meet expectations and the end result is a company mired in debt that is still experiencing headwinds impacting our ability to grow. We can’t change the past; we can only react based on current realities and an unknown future.

Our current leadership team is improving EBITDA and putting us in better stead for the future. We need not, and should not, pay off all of our debt….we just need to make progress in increasing EBITDA and reducing debt, even if it is just incremental improvement. We can’t cripple ourselves by cutting too much and risk capturing future growth…..it would just be writing our obituary. So, we’re improving EBITDA in a responsible way by increasing revenue and decreasing costs. Are we doing this in a perfect way? No. Are we doing this in a pragmatic way? Yes.

Our current leadership team was dealt a bad poker hand and a short stack of chips. They are doing well, IMHO, in managing through a less-than-ideal situation. We still have a seat at the table. I have confidence in our current leadership team to get us through the next couple of years…..mistakes will undoubtedly be made and bad things will happen, but think the end result would have been a lot worse under different leadership.

A lot of companies are managing through issues. Some have more empathy towards their employees (their family) than others. I think this is CommScope’s major shortcoming…..the familial culture at CommScope has eroded and we’re now in a survivor-like situation. There are pockets where people are acting in their own best self-interests instead of the overall best interest of the company. This is something that needs to be fixed/addressed in the near-term in order for CommScope to continue a turn-around to something better.

At the end of the day, there are reasons to be both optimistic and pessimistic about CommScope’s future. But, the same is true for practically every major company out there. I understand the need for people to be negative and angry at past leadership that has let us down, but I also think that there are still great people at CommScope, at every level of the organization, in every geography of the organization, and in every function within the organization. We can and will be better if we work hard and fight for it.

To conclude, I’ll validate the feelings of those who are feeling scared, disappointed, angry, and upset at CommScope…..our past leadership has made enormous mistakes and we’re paying the price for it. But, we do have a brighter future if we focus on what we can control instead of feeling sorry for ourselves over past transgressions. We owe it to the tens of thousands of employees at CommScope (and their families) to be the best we can be under less-than-ideal circumstances.

Just my $.02...I could be wrong.

"No matter how many projects are added/forecast, no hiring is allowed"

There's no hiring allowed in L-ARRIS. More projects are added and people keep leaving. Headhunters know and they're contacting employees about new opportunities with better benefits. The biggest HR cost is hiring/training, but there are no steps being taken to retain employees. Those who've been ki----g themselves to keep up are giving up.

"No matter how many projects are added/forecast, no hiring is allowed"

I am in HN and we are actually hiring, but mostly to backfill. Still have more work than people right now.

"I don't think anyone blames the current leadership team for Commscope's hardships." Are you for real? Current management is from the Carlyle Group. Carlyle trains them to do exactly what they're doing. Timing is bad and they can't shed BUs as planned, so they have to try to hang on as long as they can until they can start selling things off. No matter how many projects are added/forecast, no hiring is allowed. DO NOT work extra hours! It will not be appreciated and you will not be rewarded. Projects will flounder and the company will die. I give it two years max.

Our current leadership team was dealt a bad poker hand… (Probably a poker game in one of the 2 private jets that carry their golden parachute)

Let me take this tinny violin and let me play it for you !!!!

Not bad for leadership that can’t keep cyber insurance alive or give raises that are more than 3%

LEADERSHIP keeps scr I n it up !

This is 4th party hersey, but the Nascar sponsorship was a bit of a quid pro quo situation to sell equipment to Telmex. Daniel Suarez is a friend of Carlos Slim Domit, whose father Carlos Slim Helu pretty much owns Telmex and is the richest person in Mexico. Telmex would buy equipment, if Arris sponsored the Nascar team.

Obviously such a quid pro quo situation is unethical and possibly illegal, but that's what I heard in the rumor mill.

Wow, that was nicely stated however, you sound like one of the execs who are in the “2 Comma” club and how bout those stock options?

In the end, it doesn’t matter who got stuck with what. Senior management do as they please, middle management tries to micro manage the people left, encouraged by a toxic AF HR supreme leader with out of touch rules and regulations.

Once again, when it’s all about the EBITDA and the stock is back down under $7, it’s all over but the shouting.

Wait, maybe they’ll have a pizza party for everyone and that will for sure increase employee engagement.

(Remind me why at this point they are still a sponsor for a NASCAR? Throwing good money after bad? Oh yeah, Chuckie just bought $500,000 shares. Fill up that golden parachute while ya can)

I don't think anyone blames the current leadership team for Commscope's hardships. You are right that they were dealt a bad hand. But it doesn't change that Commscope is not a good place to work right now. Analysts downgraded the stock to under perform and give Commscope a 50% chance of financial hardship in the near future. Analysts are concerned that in order to stay solvent Commscope will have to cut too deep which will stifle innovation. And again, this is in no way the current leadership team's fault. We are where we are. It's just not a good place to be. In a previous post someone said to stick it out and we'd be rewarded... How exactly? Does anyone really believe in 3 or even 5 years that Commscope will significantly pay everyone more or decrease the cost of benefits. Right now the job market is still good. A lot of employees have been let go and more are leaving or retiring. Everyone who is still at Commscope is nervous about the future of the company and when the next layoffs will happen. It seems like a lot of people are polishing resumes or looking for new jobs, although who knows how serious they are. There is no quick fix to make current employees satisfied. The leadership team will have to navigate through the current financial situation, get to a point where they can stop laying off employees frequently, and increase compensation packages before employee morale improves.
