Thread regarding VMware layoffs

They want you to quit

They do. That's why there'll be little to no info in the weeks to come and that's why you'll be hearing more and more horror stories going forward. If you quit, you're making sure they save on your severance. I'm not going anywhere until they pay me. There'll always be available jobs if you have the right skills. There's no need to rush into anything right now.

Waiting for severance might not be a good strategy. I'm a long-timer and I stand to lose quite a bit if give up severance. But when entire units are laid off, you are looking at 100s of potential competitors for limited openings. If the layoffs happen in November, you can be rest assured that REQs will be very low (personal experience from previous layoff) in the holiday season and most interviewers will be out on vacation. It really starts to pick up only in February/March when the new quarter budgets kick in. By then, for most people, the severance would have run out. Switch now and save yourself trouble later.

Honestly, HCL is better than Broadcom. They offer flexibility. They won’t cut your pay, although you most likely won’t get a raise. Broadcom is not and will never be an employer that people say “wow, I hope I get that offer from Broadcom”. Most employees are acquired into Broadcom and not recruited to join. Turnover is high and Hock loves it, less people to layoff and pay severance to. Don’t be mad at Hock, he knows what he is doing!

And if instead of laying you off and paying you severance they will sell your division to a worst company like an integration company like HCL? you will not get anything then....
