Looking for advice. I've worked here for 10 years and it is time to move on for a number of reasons. Some posts on this site (which are entirely accurate) allude to people resigning and are smeared and trashed behind their backs internally and externally. Not sure if it is jealousy or envy they had the courage to leave. I have witnessed it multiple times. What would someone do here for references? While I like to believe I have forged strong relationships with colleagues at Pembina, I can't say with certainty that any of them would provide a positive reference. More concerning is people contacting their network or connections at another company to smear my name like I have heard. Do I even use a reference here? Feedback is appreciated.

There was a sensational Vice President who resigned for an opportunity to Toronto and it was rumored that MD cussed her out and several of the executive team never said a word to her again. Talk about dodging a bullet.
If you must use a reference from your time at Pembina, I would urge you to use someone who is no longer with the company and who would be thrilled to vouch for your skills and for leaving. DO NOT use a current employee as a reference. They may run to Dad and tell on you or if they are good people, it could affect their own tenure here for knowing about your intention to move on. I'm being serious. I would even fib about where I was going to avoid tampering from current Pembina staff. It has happened before for leaving the cult. Our Controller left years ago for a better opportunity and certain Pembina people went out of their way to smear their name to the new employer. Get a life. Pembina is twisted place.
I left a year ago and exactly what you have described happened to me. If you have any other options, don’t use your Pembina colleagues as references. Fortunately the position I was in when there had me interfacing with persons from other companies on a regular basis. Those were who I used. There are some really good people at Pembina that would be safe to use if you happen to know them. Unfortunately, I can’t put any of their names up on this site though. Hope all goes well and best wishes. Life is so much better once you’re out of that toxic cess pool.
