Thread regarding HP (Hewlett-Packard) layoffs

I expect that Apple will bulldoze the old HP site and build one of their futuristic campuses in its place.

Re the Boise site. So true. I left in 2005 and it was the best career decision I've made since then. There were 5k employees there at one point in the late 90s.

Anyone who actually thinks that Print is not in decline at HP is being delusional. The Boise campus, once a major HP Print site, is now a virtual ghost town. If you drove by this campus on Chinden, you could barely tell that HP even has a presence there anymore as the entire campus is owned by the State of Idaho and HP is in only 1 small building. And there’s no doubt that HP is getting out of the Rancho Bernardo site as well very soon.

If you are in any HP Print job role, look out, as you may soon be out of a job.

People think Print only entails paper. Come on now. We are not Xerox...

Print is far from dead. Guess who makes the printers that print the Amazon shipping boxes? Yep HP. They also print most of the cardboard pizza boxes too. The PWP also print out the food safe inks for agriculture boxes.

HP supplies the inks to those printers in huge tanks. Ink ain't cheap.

Print dead? Even the Costco boxes? Who do you think make printers on which they are printed? Guess where are those printers designed and tested?

Folks still don't get it that print is dead, so the question about SD site is irrelevant. It's a site for print activity, so if print is dead what site are we talking about.

Apologies. I wasn't trying to belittle your work. I just haven't heard a lot of activity from SD... then again, I don't hear much about Print since I'm with BPS under Guayente. I believe she was leading Print at some point.

As a HP San Diego employee I can tell you some of what is done at the San Diego Site.

• Commercial printing both R&D and product support (indigo, web press, etc)
• Ink and Media R&D
• 3D Print Multi Jet Fusion R&D (headed up at HP Barcelona)
• Inkjet cartridge manufacturing, about 15% of floor space. The unique commercial cartridge was only made at San Diego until recently when a duplicate manufacturing line was replicated in Singapore a few years ago (most likely to enable closing the site)

And yes the writing has been on the walls for a long time, HP San Diego will most likely go away... It has been a great place to work and continues to be for a lot of good folks.

The memo said "The new owner has confirmed they will honor HP’s lease terms with the prior landlord and fulfill their obligations going forward".

Who knows when exactly in 2023 the lease expires? I can't wait to be honest.

I am confident that HP is getting out of California. One of the previoud posts here said there's speculation amd I completely agree.

If you think about this like a manager, you will compare the productivity and contributions between your employees before deciding who to layoff. Same can probably said about buildings.

Is the SD office justifying itself to stay open or will we let them go? Do their contributions and productivity justify the bottom line? The bottom of which is something corporations never really communicate their expectations.

Frankly, I don't even know what the SD office does so that's not a good start. I can tell you what Palo Alto, Taipei, Fort Collins, Houston, Vancouver (US), Santa Anita, Boise, Corvallis, and Austin do in the America/Mexico/Taiwan regions... but not San Diego. Is it software?

Fun fact: HP only lists Houston Palo Alto on their website and Google only lists those two and Vancouver.
