My question is why does this company take so long to replace an employee who leaves. What's the problem? Has it become so difficult to attract solid employees, or is Halliburton not even trying to make replacements for individuals who leave? I have lost all hope that the colleague who left will be replaced at all, as long as there are those of us who are willing to do his work.

From someone who has worked in O&G -- and is admittedly lurking here -- but outside for ~2 years... why go back? It really is too volatile, and a bloodbath when the cuts come. I once was asked by a manager to interview at Halliburton, but saw how it slashed and burned its employees in the last downturn -- mercilessly. How could anybody want to work for such a company? I think it's a bit of everything. The old heads are really and truly gone for the most part, gen x is too old to seriously be considered for the long term future, millenials, the ones that have brains anyway, are being poached by tech/medicine/muskrat. Whatever is left is pretty much either the incompatible like gen z or just the dregs. Oil's time in the sun is certainly not now either, back in my dad's day being a machinist was a standard job in Houston now all my younger brothers are in IT or something along those lines. Also, if we consider this from a point of view of just the US, Just consider all the jobs that were offshored, at least in the manufacturing side not to mention the ups and downs of layoffs. People see that, I absolutely told my anyone in my family or that I know that was younger than me to stay away from oil and gas, it is just too godda-n volatile.
It's going to be a much leaner and much meaner industry for those of us that remain and even I'm trying to find a way out.
Refuse any additional work piled on by your managers. We are hurting for people and it is not like they will get rid of you. Let the the managers do the work instead of shuffling papers. If they do get rid of you, count it as a blessing and find a better job.
Why hire when the upper management is controlling cost to get their bonuses while the underlings continue to take it and do more work with less people. It's a win win scenario for upper management.
Probably the Cheney legacy catching up.
