OMAHA, Neb. and PITTSBURGH, July 27, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Union Pacific (NYSE: UNP) signed a historic deal with Wabtec Corporation (NYSE: W-B) for 600 locomotive modernizations featuring a suite of digital solutions and innovations. The agreement, worth more than $1 billion, is the largest investment in modernized locomotives in rail industry history, and part of Union Pacific's fleet strategy to move more freight efficiently and sustainably across its service territory.

It would be great if UP could also "modernize" its attitude towards employees, instead of treating us like dirt?

The modernization of 600 locomotives is not going to happen overnight. This is a lame attempt for the UP to hold onto the vision of successful PSR and raise the profits for the shareholders. It even mentioned a bit of it in the article. Just like others have already mentioned, who's going to maintain those "modernized" locomotives? Who's even going to be around to run the damn railroad? The UP executives might want to start focusing on a employee retention initiative.

We’ve already seen rebuilt locomotives that are ran to death. Why rebuild them if you don’t have anyone to maintain them? Up needs to step up its prison recruitment program for low paid labor.

They're just putting lipstick on a pig.

Probably a good move on U.P.'s part. New locomotives require tier 4 engines. Rebuilt ones don't.

Just what UP needs. More sh-t that can’t maintain.

Those two things are COMPLETELY related. Employee relations and rebuilding 20-30 year old locomotives has always been highly contested and intertwined issues...
