It is very likely that no one here has heard from their manager something like "Let's talk about your progress" or "I want you to know that I have total confidence in you", but I am almost sure that everyone has heard many times "Do as I say without asking questions". How is it possible that the company is teeming with such inflated egos in the positions of manager?

HahAhAhAhA!! that "lets talk about your progress" is a bait can lead to "you're not doing good enough." People with egos are narcissistic to the core. Their egos are huge, relentless. They won't listen to others especially people below or even above them. After all, they are so insecure. They're afraid of getting bad reviews. It's their position and power, being dominant that feed their insecurity. I've seen this in the location where I work. It's an illness. And HR is not much different, enabler. HR behaves an intel.
To answer your question, "How is it possible that the company is teeming with such inflated egos in the positions of manager?"
Yes the company loves to keep these managers around because they are profitable who will do what they gotta do to gain validation.
My advice? Don't say anything, do what's best you can to remain peace. Don't feed or entertain them. Don't give them feedback or ideas. Yes, it's really that toxic.
