Everyone whose manager is not one of those types that makes you want to leave because he closely observes and controls the work to the point that it is unbearable - can consider himself lucky. But I think that most of them at TD are micromanagers?

My manager is actually one of the rare ones. He communicates well, let us do our own thing. Steps in when we are overloaded with work and takes on tasks that we normally would be required to do. He even bought an ipad for one of the team using his own money because they needed it to run a customer app that only ran on ipad and Corp IT doesnt allow purchases of ipads. He works the longest hours I've ever seen someone work and in an exit interview recently, an employee gave him rave reviews.
Micromanaging allows these incompetent directors to steal ideas and any success from their subordinates as their own. My guess is that anyone like this doesn’t have an original idea of their own or the skill set to manage their team effectively. Therefore, they rely on stealing ideas and credit for any success of their subordinates. There is a director in sales training that is the epitome of an unqualified/unskilled manager yet she is still there unable to speak an entire sentence.
It's a self-selection bias. The good (normal) managers leave more quickly than the bad ones who can't find a job at another company...
