Thread regarding Boeing Co. layoffs

Need help

I have been offered level 5 at boeing. I am not sure how the work culture and the company is. Is level 5 the Max at Boeing OR are there any levels above that? Should I join. I need your advice. Thanks

Long time level 5 here. Every couple of years we get the veiled threats of being laid off because we make too much and really aren't needed. It gets tiring to the point I have just said demote me I don't care.

It seems likely they want you to train a team of mostly level 1 engineers right out of college with no experience.

It would be likely miserable for the first 4 to 5 years where you are constantly being beat up over the schedule that you can meet because of your inexperienced team.

Until they get some experience after 4 or 5, at which point they were probably lay you off and name one on the engineers on your team that you trained the new lead to save money.

Either that or you have an entire in India that you will be leading who are making 10 to 12 dollars an hour. Who again have no experience do poor quality work who you will be hung out to dry for for their poor quality work. Until they get up to speed in 4 or 5 years when you will be replaced by a level 1 engineer after you trained your team in India who now would not need much guidance.

There is not much future for older employees at Boeing. I would not quit a job to go there.

There is a Level 6 but us like a chief engineer. Boeing loves to layoff level 4 and up. Unless you are a subject matter expert you will likely get laid off at the next major layoff which happens frequently at Boeing. And don’t count on the people working under you to make you look good. Most have little to no experience. Avoid.

Level 5 is the highest level for ordinary engineering jobs. Above Level 5, Tech fellowship starts which is a club of good old boys and not very merit-based or receptive to "non-lifers".
Overall, Boeing's culture is not something to envy. Technical skills among employees are at rock bottom and employee satisfaction and development are the last priority of the company. Boeings' strategy has been to hire the lowest quality people, give them an industry minimum salary to get by, and not develop the employees so they get stuck in their low-pay positions and cost them less over time, this is the same strategy that ultimately caused the impulsion of GE. Boeing is a company that has been making huge strategic mistakes for the past 20+ years and we are just starting to see the first of the consequences of the wrong decisions come home (stock has dropped from a high of $440 to $150). The company doesn't acknowledge that there are any issues whatsoever and instead blames the employees, the suppliers, the customers (pilots, airlines), and the regulators. If you join don't expect to be pleasantly surprised, think of it as a job to do for a couple of years before you retire. Otherwise, I wouldn't recommend it, it won't make you grow and you won't enjoy the toxicity - plus there is a massive risk of more crashes and their financial consequences. As a new hire level 5, you will be a top priority when the layoffs come around.
