Thread regarding Northwestern Mutual layoffs

Long Commuters

I have a short commute so this doesn’t affect me but it has certainly affected my perception of the company. I don’t understand why those even with 1-2 hours of a commute one way have the same return to campus requirements. It’s a reminder to me that we’re nothing but a number. Wouldn’t they value these employee’s time and need for work life balance? Before the pandemic we even had several full time remotes. 1-3 times per month sounds more reasonable than 3 times per week.

I live in Chicago and commute up to Milwaukee 3 or 4 times a month. And that isn't changing, and my department lead is perfectly fine with that . World has changed over the last decade. If companies want good talent, then they need to be flexible. And I find NM to generally be flexible, though it does seem highly irregular department to department. And I mean this with NO disrespect, but there are some within the company who thumb their nose at NM hiring people from more broad geographies beyond the greater Milwaukee area. Sc--w em'. Nobody has attacked or indicted Wisconsinites as inferior so mind your own business.

Join Sangeetha's WIT. You can do whatever you want, act entitled, get an undeserved promotion, W@H, spew hate, and never be held accountable.

I chose to live closer to work and walk, bike or use public transportation. If you choose to live out in Delafield on the lake and now complain about your commute and paying for parking, that's on you. Not NM. So many entitled employees at NM. Lots of fully remote jobs out there. Oh, but that's right, NM is the only company you've ever worked for and after suckling at NMs teet for the past 20 years, you aren't skilled enough to actually get hired elsewhere.

If you have a commute of 1 to 2 hours each way, that is on you. Not NM. Fortunately, Milwaukee is an area where you can afford to live reasonably close to your job. This isn't LA or San Francisco.

The pandemic did nothing to change how far away people choose to live. Besides, there is nothing even remotely wrong with an employer wanting the employees to be back in the office. NM built a new tower with collaboration in mind. Hard to collaborate over a Zoom call.

Boomer SLT crew can't wrap their mind around the fact the world is changing. They've got a big expensive building to keep full and the thought of "local" Wisconsin folks being remote or infrequently onsite makes them lose their minds. Fully their right to choose how they want to run the biz, but it will ultimately impact what kind of talent they can get (or not).

Not sure about you, but I see the vast majority not going to the office. People getting bent out of shape about the rule that no one follows or enforces. Definitely bigger things to worry about.

Boo hoo. They chose a long commute. They were not hired as remote, stop moaning.
