"Of extraordinary performers...
Every company has unicorns that absolutely ki-l it in most if not all every aspect of their job, and generally outpace their peers, bosses and skip-level managers in delivery, charisma, thought leadership, etcetera. These folks are a company’s most prized possession in terms of talent. They are impact players that have the ability to single-handedly change a business. Their work generally impacts the company as a whole, as does their departure — hence the warning: fail to nurture this talent at your own peril.
Have programs in place that identify these high-caliber resources, that develop encourage their growth, and fast-track them to leadership positions in your company. If you don’t, your competitors certainly will. My very first manager told me something I’ll never forget: “You should always expect to lose your very best people, but you should work very hard to prevent it”. The best folks always have options, and they will exercise them if their current company cannot match their velocity and career trajectory."
